Feel like doctor is pulling a fast one on me.

Hi, I just tested positive almost 2 weeks ago. I was in the hospital about a month ago because of being very ill. The hospital said they are doing an HIV test to rule out Acute HIV Infection, although, a week after my discharge, I called my primary care doctor to see if she got the results. She called the hospital and they had no record of the test being done, even though it said "the results are pending" on my discharge papers. She had me come in for another test and the results came back positive. I've already met with an HIV specialist and am on medication now. Today, my primary care doctor asked me to come in after work because she wanted to see how I was doing and hear what the HIV specialist said. When I got there, she asked me to fill out this lengthy paper of information about myself, including previous sex partners. It said it is an initial interview form, and seemed to have to be filled out by the doctor. She said I am helping her out a lot with by filling it out. At the end of the visit, she said someone is coming Friday to audit my records. I felt like she had me come in just to save her work. I wasted my time waiting in a waiting room and then filling out those papers because I thought she really cared about how I am doing, physically and emotionally, but only felt as though she just wanted me to fill out those papers.

Why would someone be auditing my records? Aren't those private?

Something is rotten in Denmark....so to speak. Perhaps your state has mandatory reporting rules when you are positive. I found out when a worker from the State Health Department showed up at my front door. thank god the kids were in school and the wife at work. Do you know how embarassing that is? But the Law is the law in my state...any new cases need to be delivered by hand to the recipient and then i had 7 days to tell my wife, get her tested or I could lose eligibilty in any state programs that may be available.

Whoa! What if you were single and living with others with no need to know your status?! I understand the need to protect those placed at risk but that is unsettling.

There is much to be done in this country regarding the right to privacy. Luckily, my state is a bit more keen on keeping medical histories and records private. I recall having the interview. While waiting for my results, I had a long frank discussion with my partner. Later, I went in to the doctor's office for the results with a long list of additional partners my partner failed to disclose.
