Greg...sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I tested positive in Sept 2009 and started meds in December 2010. Things are going great for me and my labs are looking great so far. Things are going to be a little rough at the beginning, but in time, you will be better and will be able to deal with everything. Keep the faith and stay in touch.

Hi Greg, Your going to go through what I call The Stages of Aids. First is the shock and fear that life is over, which actually is just the opposite . Your going to see that now is when your life is truly going to begin. You see cause in the next stage you'll realize that your life is no longer over . You start to take charge of the situation and try to learn everything you can about this till your head wants to POP ! Then you realize that all you need to really know is that which pertains to your own body and health. Thirdly you find yourself wanting to reach out to others that are just coming to terms with there new diagnoses. You see that problems that once seemd huge are just minor problems. This is when I liketo say the greens are greener , reds bolder , yellows brighter. The colors of life become amazing. And fourthly , you rediscover who you truly are, where you fit in this crazy world. You look at how to work , your relationships and how you want to spend your days without the stress of worry and fear. And lastly , the one that EVERYONE faces is the thoughts of death. It's not a morbid thought. I have had friends that actually planned their funerals. They became empowered and took charge and that gave them a wonderful spiritual freedom.
So you see my friend this is just one of lifes chronic situations. Don't let it plow you down . Take hold of it , become empowered and see how wonderful life is. It may even ,in a crazy way, seem like a blessing in disguise...........river

Hi trulife,

Thank you for your comment- it’s such a blow. I don’t think i have really accepted it as of yet, it just seems to surreal as if it was a bad dream but i will have to come to terms with it. I have done a lot of reading on trusted websites and reading material that i was given but i am wanted to more about medications and all these crazy side effects that i am reading about...

Hi Michael- thank you very ,much for your kind words/ Today i out sourced a support group in my community and connected with a poz women and was able to have a chat with her face to face and really understand ( understanding that each persons situation is different ) but it was good to hear rather then read. Its still surreal and am shocked and haven't had much sleep but i find talking about it is helping more then anything! Thank you for your encouraging words!

You should develop a proper perspective. Take the stigma out of it and the fact is that an HIV+ diagnosis is certainly much better than that of many types of cancer or MS among others, and even easier nowadays to handle than diabetes.

Depending on your CD4 count and other factors, the first few weeks -- may extend to months though symptoms will keep decreasing -- may be rough ( nausea, vomit, mouth and stomach upsets...) , but focusing on your health by not only taking the prescribed medicines but also by eating a healthy balanced diet ( put quality above quantity ) and resting whenever the body beckons, will allow you to sail through to calmer waters.

Take the shaking experience of your diagnosis as a character-building life-opening venture. Take charge. To enable this, I advise to make the matter your own private business as you would for many others : disclosure is only warranted where it matters, that is in the medical setting, though you may wish to share with a selected number of people for emotional support.

Lastly, many and varied innovative research endeavors to improve treatment, contain or cure the virus are going on. Scientists are now more hopeful and active in this area than ever.

Hi Greg. I'm really glad you have supportive people in your life, not all are as fortunate. I was diagnosed not quite 3 months ago and the only ones I have told are my adult children and it will probably remain that way.

I hope you have been referred to an HIV clinic so you can get your labs done and see where you stand. Thankfully mine are really good at this point and no need for meds yet but I've been wondering about them as you have. But one step at a time.

Trulife is a WONDERFUL person to talk to! ( I seen he posted here) such a positive person. And River pretty much hit it on the nail with the stages. I read anything I could get my hands on about HIV and still do. Hang in there and you have alot of support here

Hey Greg, Lost , River and all other who responded.....All very encouraging words and so true that LIFE truly does begin NOW. It is a journey and it is up to each of us to determine how we approach it and what we do to make things better. I am so much happier today than ever before despite the fact that things have changed so much in my life. It is a true blessing to have people out here who feel the same way and are living their lives. Yes things change, yes there is rejection (i faced it head on just recently), yes we need to change....but LIFE DOES GO ON! I am here for anyone who wants to reach out. We live in so many different places, but it doesn't prevent us from giving support, comfort, and encouragement when needed. So feel free to hit me up anytime. I promise I will get back as soon as possible. I go to the docs again in the next two weeks and I expect to be undetectable and an even higher CD4 count. I feel fantastic and life is better now than before. I live TRUE and see things clearly....Defintely agree with River's comments. Stay strong and keep in touch.

Hi Greg!

I do know what you are going through - I tested positive in January, after having a 13+ week negative from being exposed in a bad ER here, in Thailand. I started the Atripla regimen this last Saturday, and am feeling well again after suffering a long time.

Have you had any confirmatory testing? If so, get your VL and CD4 numbers. I also recommend a genotyping and sensitivity test before you start treatment. This will give you the information you need to choose your meds correctly. You will be fine, if you choose to be. These meds are great, for most people, and will get you back on track, in power of your health and destiny.

I am here for you too, please PM me with any questions you have and I will answer you honestly. You have my prayers and my attention. You will be fine and see how to add life to your years while we wait for the cure to come - it is coming my friend. Don't lose hope and don't lose faith in yourself!

All the best, and I hope to hear from you!

HI Greg,

I tested positive at the beginning of February, while hospitalized with PCP. I hadn't felt right the last year or so with fatigue and these "colds" and "digestive issues" Had a full physical but didn't have an HIV test at that time because I tested in 2008, well past any window, and had no risk factors from then until now that would make me feel the need (I was a regular tester).

So, I feel you when you talk about the shock. I was told in the hospital, and I think I was so doped up from the meds they were giving me that it blunted it a bit. That was probably good for a freakout like me! From the time they told me to now, I was online researching and very much reading things on here, from people who have experience of how it really is. This site and aidsmeds.com forums have some wonderful people who are compasionate, full of humor, and wise, wise advice.

From this, I tell myself - this is your opportunity to feel yourself again, make some good changes for your health, and continue living. Start meds on March 28 because I have the week off.

I think it's also wise to continue reading here and checking in. I learn something everyday.

Very nicely put River. You are so absolutely right in regards to every one of those stages you mentioned. My husband and I experenced all of that. Now, once the fear is not something we let invade our every thought, we look at all of this as a blessing. Odd I know, but it truly was a blessing. It does make you feel different, not in a bad way, but it makes you appreciate things you didn't take the time to before. This is hardly a death sentance at all. I overwhelmed myself on the internet daily after my husband was diagnosed. Knoweledge is good, but too much is simply not healthy....it's overwhelming and can plant negative thoughts in your head. Take care of yourself, establish a relationship with a good specialist and get back to enjoying life again. There are some wonderful people out here to talk to and chat with that are very supportive. Keep your head up, things WILL improve, no doubt about it!
God Bless.
