Not to make light of your situation but...

Back in the bad old days before HAART I had a t cell count of zero and a viral load over 1,000,000. Eleven years later I'm still here. You'll probably do OK and maybe even do great. Take your meds, quit smoking, limit drinking and you'll probably be around for many years to come.

There is definitely hope! I have been positive since 1997. My partner went full blown in Dec. 1996 and had a CD4 count of 13. We are still together, healthy, to this day. Even though his diagnosis is AIDS, he still has a CD4 count in the normal range with an undetectable viral load. And, there are many medicines available today if you have access to them that weren't around in 1997! Good luck!

Hello
I was in the same boat about 16 months ago when I tested postive with a viral load of 334,000 and a TCell count of 106.
I was put on Atripla immediately. By June I was undetectable. I just got my latest blood results this week and I still am undetectable and now have a TCell count of 354. I will not tell you it was an easy year. That little voice telling you you have AIDS is very loud in the beginning. As time goes on there are days I do not even think about it. Few, but there are days. I do just about everything I want at this point. I started a blog the day I found out I was HIV+ on January 7, 2009. I give a very detailed and honest account of what I have gone through in the past year. Check out my blog link below and feel free to email me anytime for support or questions. Good luck. Stay strong, and smile, life is not over.
Dave

same here. it is scary but if you trust your doctor you wil be fine. i even have bad allergic reactions to my medications, so hang in there because the medications are now developing fast. just eat well, sleep 8 hours a day and exercise if you physically can.

Hi,
Last October I had to go through the same type of results where within a week 1/2 I have learned I was positive, my CD4 count was 120 and my viral load at 800,000. I started my HIV treatment (Atripla) on October 31st 2009. As of Marsh 25th, 2010 my viral load is un-detectable and my CD4 count is up at 390.
I keep exercising, eating well and I drink occasionally. As you, I freaked out at the beginning but I tried to keep a positive attitude as much as I could. Of course everyone can react differently to treatment but I am a proof that is works.

Good luck to you and be very disciplined about your treatment.

With time you will be able to put all into perspective as you go through the process of accepting your diagnosis. Only a month into this it is only natural to have doubts. Please give yourself some time and also learn all you can about HIV and your health. Also having a positive attitude and having a support group will help you along.

I had been negligent in testing regularly for close to 10 years. Then I was diagnosed but by then already well on my way to getting very sick. I had a CD4 count of 15 and my viral load was 750,000. It did take a while, almost 8 years now but I now have a CD4 count of over 400. I've responded well to HAART therapy and have achieved undetectable status only after 3 month of meds.

I believe that there is a way to live a long and mostly healthy life if you adhere to your regimen as much as possible. Of course finding an HIV specialist that is willing to work with you and your concerns - that does make a difference.

I hope this helps!

It's ok to be frightened because the US Health Department andeven local departments responsible for educating the public about health concerns realities and practices remains completely ineffective getting proper correct medical information to those that need it most. YOU ARE GOING TO BE OK! the medical researchers that keep HIV a manageable infection for the purposes of profit have made huge strides in medications that will have you undetectable with a strong CD4 in a few months at most. When my body crashed I had a CD4 of 62 and a viral load of 1.2 milion! I am now undectable and my viral load has been climbing up and up and is just under 400 and I went thru 2 years of drug and alcohol abuse while undergoing treatment....Start TODAY and take it one small healthy step at a time! YOU'RE GOING TO BE FINE! Read everything including every issue of TheBody.com and accept nothing but a healing wonderful collection of friends and life habits and enjoy many many years to come. PS...friends of mine have been living well for almost 20 years now and show no signs of laying down yet...:)

My first test wasn't the same as yours, but it was bad at the beginning. My viral load was 130 000 and my cd4 count was 205, that was 2 years ago. I was put on meds straight away and since then things just got better. I had my last test this year february and my viral load is still undetectable and my cd4 count is now up to 720. So don't worry about it, just take your meds like you are suppose to and keep healthy and you will be fine.
All the best

I tested pos over 5 years ago with 101 CD4's and a VL of 56,000. Today, after 5 years on Atripla my CD4's have finally hit over 340 and am undetectable.
I did have to deal with a bad body rash that started turning into Steven Johnson Syndrome - deadly - but am still here to tell about it.

Can you speak up? I'm having a difficult time hearing you?

I can vaguely remember the days when 2 boyfriends would go to the doctor to get HIV tested together. That was back before the dinosaurs....

DON'T PANIC!!!! Your doctors and nurses are telling you the truth. You can get better. But, excellant that you're this concerned!

When I first tested HIV+ back in 1988 (Yes, more than 20 years ago) there was no such thing as a CD4 reading (possible but extremely expensive). And, the people who could conceive of the idea of "viral load" probably numbered in the dozens worldwide.

Things have come so very far in the short 28 years or so that HIV has been in the civil light.

In 1999 when I started meds my CD4 was <20. My viral load was well above 1,000,000. This past Wednesday I spoke with the doctor who treated me then. He says he remembers looking into my eyes and not expecting me to live. Noone ever told me I was going to die. So, I didn't.

My recently tests have been with an undetectable viral load and a CD4 of over 650. Some over 750.

Like I said above - DON'T PANIC!!!! Be concerned. Follow the instructions of the doctors and nurses. Speak with your case manager. Speak with others locally who are also HIV+. You'll find that because of the way this disease is passed and the symptoms (basically none initially) that many people have been surprised and found themselves in similar boats when they first found out.

Actually, while not great, a CD4 of 160 isn't too bad considering.

As for the question "AM I CRAZY" - the answer is if your not it helps to be to deal with the world in which we live. I like to think of myself as slightly off balanced....

Hey there. I can relate and know what you are going through.

Last September I was diagnosed and it was a total shock as I've never done any of the so-called "high risk" activities. A week later I found out that I had a CD4 count of 58 and a viral load of 1.5 million. It was a horribly scary time, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't still have my down days mentally.

But now, I'm undetectable and my CD4 count is 254 and growing. I feel good, and actually good enough to power lift 4 days a week and run 4 days a week. And through it all, so far I haven't gotten even a cold (knock on wood) while most of the people around me at work have had some bad bouts with various colds, flu, etc.

Take a deep breath, and do as the doc tells you. I imagine you will be pleasantly surprised when you start getting your follow-up labs.

And thanks to the other posters on this thread. Your posts are very encouraging.

Your really in the drivers seat with HIV. A lot of people wished their CD4's were that high when just diagnosed. If you can get assistance with KPAX Vitamins I truely believe they helped my CD4 jump from 300 to about 450 in just a few months. I know Ryan White funds assistance for these in Houston. Keep your stress down, eat right, exercise and get good rest. Good luck and remember their are a lot of us in this with you..
