Dear thebody members,
Only a few weeks ago, I tested positive for HIV and currently I am looking for a physician in the New York City area. I ve been reading that is very important to get a doctor with experience and up-to -date knowledge. A specialist that you feel confortable with!!! But I don't know where to even start looking!!! This is all still a bit foreign to me. I would really appreciate if some of you could share your physician experiences with me. Do you like your physician? Would you recommend him to a friend in the same situation? Any pointers you have picked up from your experience: dos and donts of doctor-client relationships in HIV treatment, etc. My current health plan is United Health Care. I checked their network and they have a list of specialists in NYC, but I don't really know how to choose. Thank you all for you help in advance, this community has already done a lot for me in the last few weeks.

Blue: If I were you I would take the list of United Helath Care Infectious Disease Specialists and compare it to a list of recommended HIV /Infectious Disease Specialists that you might be able to get from an AIDS SERVICE ORGANIZATION like the GAY MENS HEALTH CRISIS. If there is no match, then....well....you have to start somewhere. You know whats necessary...right? 1. Blood work over the period of a year..blood draws every three months ( or four) ....this kind of depends on where your CD4 and Viral Load and CD % are at first blood draw.. 2. Keep a record or chart your progression. 3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle..diet and supplements and so on. Let us know how it goes.

Hi bluewindow
I've empathy with you. Less than two weeks ago I tested positive. I understand your concern in locating a physician. I live in Houston and exhausted internet sources with little success. One of the largest medical centers in the world and very few hiv physicians. I finally located a community hiv/aids clinic and just walked in the front door and asked for help. I was truly fortunate in that I was immediately directed to a counselor, and within the next hour received a lot of info and an appointment with a private internist that specializes in hiv treatment. Got blood tests and started meds yesterday. MY SUGGESTION TO YOU: see if you have a public or community hiv/aids clinic in you area - there's a good chance you can get help similar to mine.
Do's and don'ts of a doctor-client relationship? Absolute honesty.
Good Luck
