Bad Dream Part II
      #192921 - 05/24/06 06:03 PM

Thanks to all for you kind words yesterday. (I posted in the wrong forum-Living with HIV). Went to doctor yesterday for first test results. First test ELISA-positive, second test Western Blot-positive. Am awaiting results of another Western Blot, CD-4 and HIV-RNA, due the end of this week. Clinic won't confirm diagnosis until 2nd Western Blot is positive. If it is, I will then be referred to the doctor from the clinic who specializes in HIV medicine. He's a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at UCSD and certified as an HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV medicine. I guess thats good. My doctor highly recommended him.
Last night I told my partner. I was expecting anger and accusations, but instead got comfort and love. We then both got drunk on Bombay Sapphire martinis and each had two forbidden cigarettes (I quit 2 years ago, he in January). Went to bed cuddled in his arms, but didn't sleep a wink. I need to fill the prescription for Restoril today. Doctor did say the other bloodwork (white blood cells, lympocites?, etc.) all looked good. I hope that's a good sign. It's still like a bad dream, but having my partner on my side is helping tremendously.

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I was diagnosed about 3 months ago, and it's been a real roller coaster of emotions. My husband is also supportive, which is amazing to me, considering I contracted HIV through an affair. He remains HIV negative, which is also amazing, because we had unprotected sex many times before I got my definitive test results.

I wish we had a real HIV specialist around here, but the family practice doctor I am now going to has about 20 years experience dealing with HIV case management, and he seems very knowledgeable. My labs initially were all messed up, with a very low white blood count and very elevated liver function tests. Since then, white blood count is back to normal, and liver functions getting there slowly. My initial viral load, about 3 months after exposure and 1 month after diagnosis, was 43,600 with a CD4 of 569. Will have labs done every 3 months, probably for years - next ones due in early July.

Keep in touch, and keep coming here. Feel free to read my old posts, I started coming here before I was sure it was HIV, because I had a full blown case of Acute Retroviral Syndrome, and I thought I was going to die! But I'm not, and this is not a death sentence. It's a chronic, treatable condition that requires close monitoring and maintaining a healthy immune system.
