my dr said everything is normal..NORMAL?!!
      #173056 - 02/02/06 06:31 PM

Nothing has been "normal" for me since 8/23/05 @ 9:30am when i was diagnosed. My HIV was discovered by accident. I ended up in the hospital after running a fever of 103 for 3 days & stomache cramps like I had never known. The fever persisted @ 103 - 104 for the next 2 weeks. I was taking 3000ml of Motrin a day to keep the fever down & 2 different kinds of antibiotics. i live in Florida, so 3 hurricanes in a row made for tricky doctor appointments & a lot of cancellations. It turned out that I had chlamydia & I was pregnant. The infection abcessed my fetus & the infection spread from my uterus, fallopian tubes, bladder, kidney & urinary tract & stomach lining. I was not in good shape. The doctor had suspected ovarian cancer from the ultrasounds, but I begged him to run EVERY SINGLE bloodtest in the world on my... I wasn't going to go back to the hospital for anything. Well, I went in to his office a week later all ready to hear I had cancer. NOPE. "I don't know how to tell you this, you're HIV+" And then I fell off the chair, hyperventilated & cried, no sobbed hysterically. My bestfiend was there & she held me and just kept telling me it was going to be ok. Long story short, my first set of labs came back with my CD4 280 & my VL 86,000. My doctor recommended I start meds (SUSTIVA & TRUVADA) it took me 2 weeks to take the prescription to the pharmacy. I was about to begin the rest of my life on meds. That was 10/3/05. 2nd labs 10/31 CD4 330 & VL undetectable. My 3rd set of labs 2/16/06 VL undetectable & my CD4 is 651! My doctor told me he'll see me in 12 weeks, get out of his office because his office is for sick people. He told me to go live my life... but be careful & take my meds! He said that there is nothing wrong with me & I am perfectly healthy (minor cold, but I'm all over it now) So what happens now?? Just keep taking my meds and living? How long will this last? I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. I feel so very blessed that my #'s are the way they are... but is it just a fluke?

Co is right.. Go live your life. I do whatever my doc tells me to do.. Now, mentally you probably have some growing to do as I know I certainly am stunted here. So when my numbers get good, do I then WAIT for the shoe to drop until they get bad? Your doc wont let that happen. It wont happen as long as you do what your told. How bloody simple that is for me. Jee, if I dont snap out of this worry stuff, I am going to miss out on why these drugs were made for us in the first place. They are not meds or drugs.. They are "Goodies" as William puts it. Of course the doggy treats are also "Goodies" as long as he gives me pills and not milk bones, I will live a good and not to RRRRUUFFF life.. Right?? I did have William move the two different Goodies and have them in to different areas of the house. Just in case. I am being proactive here.... Yeah!

Love

Wow that is quite a story. I had a slightly different experience - perfectly healthy, was getting a physical, decided I had not been HIV tested in awhile and a normal day turned into an nightmare.

and I know what you mean - my primary care doctor was not the best at delivering the news and had me completely freaked out by the time I got to the infectious disease doctor. I haven't had to start on meds yet and am sort of dreading the time that will come so I can only imagine that first trip to the pharmacy.

But I have to agree with your doctor -- that is great news that your CD4 is high and VL low so go enjoy! Hug that best friend back!

I'm so glad I found this forum- had no idea - just signed up tonight.

you know i was thinking the same thing!! i just started the back piece last year before i knew i was positive. so, i decided to incorporate everyone & everything that really influences my life in a positive direction. the footprint of my God daughter, a daffodil for my grandfather who passed away 18yrs ago, a rose bloom for my gramma... and i haven't decided on the rest. hopefully i have more than enough time to finish it. my mom got a little upset asking me what i was going to do with all these tattoos whne i'm 50 years old. i just looked at her and said that if i was still around when i was 50 years old i'll be looking for a free space to put another one. then she understood. this is my "hobby" i guess. i have 9 tattoos now. each one reminds me of a place in my life.. like a different chapter. it's a very enlightning expierence for me. my own version of a zen moment i guess. it hurts... kinda, but it's an experience in yourself i guess. i take myself to a different place and just think about anything but the feeling of the needles pokin the crap out of me!! LOL!

I had the same experience with drug response almost 3 years ago now. I am priviledged to have a 'top of the line' specialist at the medical College of Georgia who immediately placed me on Sustiva, Emtriva and Viread (Emtriva and Viread now combined as Truvada) and within 6 months I was undectable and my T's were back to normal range. My specialist is convinced and has convinced me that though I am going to die - we all will some day - it won't be because of HIV/AIDS. I turned 50 this year and I live every day to the fullest (and take my meds every evening). I hope you will, too.

Yes, everything will be fine. It took me about a year to adjust, but I'm better than ever now.

And by the way, if at some point you want a child in the future, it is still possible. it just takes the right medical care to reduce the risk of infection to the baby to as low as 5%. Not sure if you want children or not...but I thought I'd throw that out there!

Buddy, just take your meds (but be super compliant - same time EVERY day) and go on with enjoying life. See your dr regularly for checkups. I was diagnosed 20 years ago, began meds as soon as possible and still am undectable and high t counts. I am more apt to get sick from old age at this point.......

the scarring is pretty bad... the risk is too high, and the future too uncertain. enough people are hurting about the diagnosis. having a child lose a parent is unfair. if a cure were in sight around the corner, maybe.... but i'll leave well enough alone & make a lot of lemonade out of this great big bag of lemons i have.
