Seroconversion and Peripheral Neuropathy
      #133543 - 01/26/05 06:17 AM

This is a question for anyone who is living with HIV or who has recently been diagnosed as HIV positive:

Did any of you experience the numbness/tingling in the feet, legs, hands and arms during your seroconversion?

If so . . . for what period of time did the sensation last? How severe was it?

Did you test positive before, during or after experiencing PN? And at how many weeks after exposure did you test positive?

Also . . . is it common for this numbness and tingling often associated with the process of seroconverting?

And finally . . . at how many weeks after exposure did you experience PN?

Let me describe my situation.

I had protected(or so I thought) sex with a streetwalker 3 weeks ago. When I removed the condom, I noticed that there were blood spots along the rim of the condom. This definitely would have come in contact with my penis when I had removed the condom. I just freaked out and didn't know what to do.

On dec 16th, I startd feeling tightness around my neck and along the jaw line. There was also this weird feeling of pressure in my ears. My ears also had the 'airplane ears' feeling and was constantly crackling.

Then on Dec 31st, The node under my left arm pit started being tender and a little painfull. The area between the nipple and the armpit was also paifull(like a blocked lymph duct or something).

On Jan 2nd, the area around my right breast became sore just like the same feeling on my left side. There was no pain under the right armpit though. On the same day, I started feeling twinges in my groins. I couldn't feel anything swollen, by there was definitely discomfort on both sides.

All this while, the ear crakling and the swollen feeling at the juncture of my neck, ears and jawline was still persistent.

5th Jan to Jan 6th - Slight loose motion. Nothing bad.

Jan 6th(about 4 weeks after exposure) - Developbed body pains in my neck and shoulder.

Jan 7th - Started feeling very tired. Developed low grade fever(about 99F)

The tender paifull feeling on the outer side of the nipples were gone by now. the ear crakling and the swollen feeling at the juncture of my neck, ears and jawline was still present.

Jan 10th - Decided to get the DNA PCR test done. Went to the lab and had my blood drawn. It was 31 days after exposure.

The fever lasted about 6 to 7 days on and off. I was taking tylenol constantly and this helped.

I was so tired on Jan 10th, 11th and 12th. Also had a feeling of nausea even though I did not vomit.

Jan 12th - Noticed a slightly raised 'quarter sized' red rash irregularly shaped on my left upper arm. This disappeared in two days.

Jan 13th - Tingling warm needles feeling in my left palm, fingers and left foot.

Jan 14th - Results of the DNA PCR came back negative.

Jan 18 - Tested negative at 41 days on the EIA test.

Now - STill terrified due to all the above symptoms eventhough the only symptoms that I seem to have now is the swollen feeling at the juncture of my neck, ears and jawline and the tingling, numb feeling that seems to have started fainlty with my right limbs also.

What do you folks think? WHat are my chances of me being OK? I take a lot of multivitamins(Selenium,VitE,VitC and a host of others). Would this cause a negative read on the tests?

God bless all of you for your courage and willingness to inform an help others.

Can somebody please post something. How accurate/reliable are the PCR DNA at 28 days and the ELISA at 40 days? Please please please...

Tony.

PN comes from HIV meds.
Maybe you should post in the "Am I infected" section or read the back posts and see how many times this has been answered.

Funny I should come across your letter. I experienced everything like you did. I did not realize at the time why. You really need to get tested to relieve your anxiety. However I was negative the first quarter of 2004. Had unprotected sex in July that I can remember. Had the Rash quarter size on my left arm as you explained during Halloween weekend. That prompted me to get tested for a STD. On Novemember 31st 2004 I was tested and was tested positive for HIV. I am only replying because it was surreal to read your post. It is always better to know asap.

tony0110...

I have very similar symptoms as you, except for the quarter size rash on my arms. It has been 2 months since my potential exposure to HIV. The symptoms of tightness around the ear and jawline started around 2 weeks after the sexual encounter with a HIV status unknown woman.

I also had the slight discomfort below my armpits and groin only from time to time, but there are no swollen lymph nodes. I have read from numerous sources online that Acute Symptoms do not last over 2 weeks. However, the tightness around my ears still persists till today.

I have been to an ENT specialist who said I was fine. I'm too scared to get tested for HIV. After reading your post, and learning that we have similar symptoms after possible exposures makes me feel more uncomfortable. I'm sure I'm not making you feel any better either.

I hope you got tested again since your last post and found out that you were indeed negative.

Can you please tell me whether you found out what is causing the tightness around the ears? Or if anyone out there can please tell me...

Thank you.

Yes, I did experiance numbness and tingling in my feet and hands approx. 3 months after I suspect I was infected. These feelings went away, but are what prompted the visit to the doctor where I found out it was hiv. Not to freak you out or anything, but PCR tests are only like 50% accurate. From what you've described, it might not be hiv. You did use protection. DO NOT play the denial game. Make sure you get retested at the appropriate time. Now is your best chance to battle the progression of this disease, should you be infected. If you're not, just knowing will be worth it. Good luck.
