HIV at the salon?
      #3356 - 04/06/00 06:58 PM

I might sound a little paranoid now, but I am pretty worried. My dad went to get a hair cut recently and the barber was using a razor and accidently cut my dad. I am afraid that the barber used the same razor on a lot other people. Is it possible for my dad to have been infected?

highly unlikely... HIV dies within seconds of exposure to air. However, MANY other viruses DO survive in open environments outside the human body. I'd be more concerened about Hepatitis B or the risk of bacterial infection from equipment not properlly sterilized. Similar concerns lie with body-piercings. The only place where a REAL concern about HIV transmission can occur is with unsterile tattooing. If tattoo parlours are re-using their ink, the ink bottles are closed environments, and something in the ink allows HIV to survive for at least several days. MAKE SURE NO EQUIPMENT OR INK IS EVER RE-USED... you run the risk of a varity of infections, bacterial and viral, if equipment is not sterilized. In CANADA there are VERY limited health regulations regarding proper sterilization. Be aware of this, and look out for yourself, because no one else will.
