Tattoo and me
      #155570 - 05/30/05 05:11 AM

Hello, I'm 16 going on 17 and I want to get a tattoo for my birthday. I am HIV positive. I'm wondering if there can be any complication towards me if I get a tattoo. I am of course aware that I need to go to a safe sterile professional environment when getting a tattoo. I already know where I might be going if I decide to get one and I assure you it's very safe and he is very good about throwing away dirty needles and so forth. Like I said, I am concerned that it might do damage to me. But, I don't really know too much about this stuff when it comes to tattoos. If any has any information please let me know. I guess it'd be best to talk to my doctor before getting it. Still, let me know if you know anything about it, thanks.

This kind of goes to an ethical question. Does the person who is going to do the tat know that you are pos? If not, think about accidental sticks....Otherwise to answer your question my husband is on his 5th tattoo since being diagnosed and it has posed no problem. We even checked with his doctor just to make sure there would be no infection problem (which is what I think you are worried about, right?). The only question posed to us by his doc was the ethical one, and we still think about it today. To answer one question, no we did not feel comfortable revealing the status, yet what scared us was the proverbial needle stick and then having to reveal the status, which could possibly lead to legal ramifications. (Unfortunately or fortunately his doctor got our minds working overtime, yet for valid reasons.) Just once again maybe go in and talk to the artist and get to know him before you decide. Maybe even broach the subject with him on how he would deal with an "HIV possibility" ie; what procedure would he use, etc. If he seems game to the whole procedure and doesnt wig out about that type of discussion and you feel comfortable you may want to disclose to that person your status and if he would feel comfortable working on you. I am quite sure there are a number of artists who will. ULTIMATELY IT IS YOUR CHOICE!!! Good luck! Let me know if you decide to and what you are going to get, I LOVE TATS!

Hey Thanks, The tattoo artist is a good friend of our neighbor whom I really trust. He seems to really trust him and aparently the community does too. I guess he's been around for a long time and he's really good. Well, I'm glad to know that the possibility of infection is not that high. I don't really want to tell him about my "condition", so you think it might be good to at least check about what he does for sterilization? Make sure he knows and takes caution, and that he uses the appropriate procedures? I'm sure he does because he's really professional about it. Oh, I could talk to my neighbor about the HIV stuff because he knows, and check with him about his friend? I'm sure it'll be alright... I'm thinking about getting a design from my tribe (Pima). I'm half native american, & half mexican. I feel like I want to be closer to my heritage. I'd like to keep where I came from closer to me:)

Yeah check with the friend and feel him out to see what he thinks. If you dont feel comfortable discussing it with the artist, it is your right. Just keep in mind what I said about possible sticks and how you would deal with that situation. Your tat sounds cool. I personally dont believe that positive individuals should be limited with what they can do, it is almost like a throwback to the 80's. People use much more precaution today, and as of yet my husabnd has had no problems. The only time we had to reveal his status was when he was getting his hair faded and they nicked him. We just asked that they sterilize (like they should anyway) and she had no problem doing it. i am not saying that all people are cool like that, because unfortunately many people are still narrow minded to the safety measures that can be taken for ANY person to lead a "normal" life. Get a pic taken and upload it and send it to me. I would love to see it. tiink@hotmail.com

I highly recommend YOU making damn sure that the tattoo artist KNOWS of your HIV status. That way precautions can be taken to properly protect the artist. There is nothing you need to worry about, just make sure you don't take aspirin within 5 days of the session and don't drink alcohol beforehand or use other blood thinning medications. Somebody once told me that ANYTHING that you truly want doesn't hurt. That's a load of crap. I have 5 dungeons and dragons type tattoo's across my pelvic area and believe me: It hurt like hell !! But I love my body-art, and if this is something you really want, I say: GO FOR IT. Just make sure you disclose your status. And HAVE FUN with it
