How long should I wait for testing to work?

My girlfriend watched a video in school saying that it could take ten years, while testing every five months, to determine if you have AID's. Is there any truth to that?

NO
I will try make this easy to understand. If 100 people are exposed to HIV via a risky behavior and the HIV actually infects them, Then: 75 will test positive after a month 10 more will test positve after 3 months the rest will test positive after 6 months
Those are the numbers I remember from taking AIDS 101 at a local ASO for volunteers.
In fact there is a lab test in clinical trials that can tell if someone was infected within 6 months or not.
Foster Dx 10-2004, Infected 06-2004

What your girlfriend probably "misunderstood" about the video, is that....without being tested )...it could take up to 10 years before you ever get any symptoms of being infected!!!!!!!
To make it easy, if you had sex with a girl today, and was tested for hiv....by the 3rd month you would have an accurate hiv result.

[quote]the video must have been beta and made in 1984,and just about EVERYONE will test + by 3 months(99%)and for most people at about 8 weeks (95%)will show +,now days most hiv+ people will never progress to aids.

Yikes! Tell her to tell her mother to call the school and have them remove the video. Absolutely wrong! You can tell within 3 months. Maybe she misunderstood? It takes and average of 10 years to have a symptom if you're positive.

Naw belive me man, I called teh CDC today. Here's the truth... The vast majority will test positive within 4-6 weeks. 97% will test positive by 3 months, 3% have to wait 6 months, and less than 1% have to wait mre than 6 months to show antibodies. Bsically, the average person will have an accurate test result at about 8 weeks after exposure.

Yes, but then there's also the possibility that your test came back with a false negative. It's just generally a good idea to get tested every 2-3 months for the first year. And use condoms with *every* partner, you don't want to risk giving it to someone else if you have it.

YOu do not need to test every 3 months for one year. After the 13th week w/ a negative results....this is the last you need to worry.
