Germs, germs germs...good, bad, ugly?
      #185207 - 04/07/06 03:50 PM

Thanks for everyone's feedback on my question about my baby making her nanny sick. We still haven't got his labs, but he seems pretty healthy, so we have our fingers crossed that he will not need meds right away.

Anyhow, we are moving along on our plan to buy a house (move out of our condo) for our second baby's arrival and for Uncle David to live with us.

I have never been a fan of anti-bacterial cleaners, because I am very wary of creating super bugs. I have a resistent bacterial infection myself that ebbs and flows, but never seems to die (for years!) and I am also quite chemical sensitive so I like to use eco-friendly cleaners.

HOWEVER, I picked up a can of lysol at the drugstore last week, becasue it said it was anti-tubercular (among other things) and I thought maybe I should use it to disinfect at least the bathroom and the doorknobs/lightswitches once a week or so.

Would this do more harm than good? What do you all do about this issue? What's the greater risk, the super-bug possibility or the common germs getting Uncle David? We still would wash our hands with (lots of warm water and) non anti-bac soap and I'd only use the lysol very strictly according to the strictest anti-germ directions.

Any advice?

Personally, I dont know about super bugs or any of that. Sounds like a myth to me. However, I can offer you an example about being overly cautious about germs and bugs. A long ways back in the HIV epidemic, we were told to be careful of cat litter boxes......that toxoplasmosis lurked in them. Some Hiv poz guys actually got rid of dear pets as a result. We kept our cats and use lysol, bleach and Comet cleanser or whatever else is handy to clean them. Never had a problem.
Then........ lo and behold we were told that .......well,....maybe having pets was a beneficial thing. Pets help one feel better. ETC
So, then it was ok to have pets. Just make sure you keep the litter box clean. Wash your hands often. Which we do whenever we come in from outside.
I suggest you use lysol to disinfect ....the bathrooms or whatever. And if you love this person you will let him decide what his level of comfort is regarding germs and such.

It reads in my post that we used cleansers "to clean them" and if you diagram the sentence it means on the cats.....of course I meant cleaning the litter box.
So, let me add this. HIV positive people have colds at about the same rate as everyone else. I for example, do not have "AIDS" while my partner does. He has fewer colds than I do. I dont think colds are such a big problem for the average HIV poz person. They dont destroy the immune system any more than stress does. Reduce your stress, laugh, and your immune system improves. See, that is what your friend needs.

cat litter is a problem for toxo. But you can avoid it if you use gloves. The danger is getting the feces on your hands, not washing and then somehow injesting it. As long as you wear gloves, no problem.

wasnt there some information out about house cats vs cats that roam otdoors? IE: house cats do not pose the threat of toxo?
