My mother was diagnosed
      #100848 - 07/06/04 07:28 PM

She was diagnosed HIV positive 4 months ago and can't get into see the HIV Specialist for another month! She weighs 95 pounds and is extremely itchy. I reside 2200 miles away and can't help her. Does anyone know how far advance she could be? I feel so helpless and scared. All she does is sleep, GP put her on Ativan. She thinks that she was infected in 1997. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

What I am gathering is your mother was diagnosed in April sometime. You posted your message in July. There is no way that I know of to tell how long you've had HIV. I don't understand why it is taking so long for her to see a doctor that deals with HIV. You'll have to wait to see what her viral load and CD4 count are currently. In the mean time you can get pamplets from your health department on this HIV. You have the best tool available at your finger tips. Use the internet to educate yourself on HIV/AIDS. There is also the hotlines that you can call for information. Ask her if she is going to the health department for treatment. If so, get her a case manager. They can help.

Thank you Doodlebug. The latest: she finally got to see the specialist, he did nothing for her itchies, her immune system is real bad. what should be a 1200 count is now 50, She told me that she didn't know what they were counting. The prescription that he gave her will not be available for another 2 weeks. I seriously feel that this delaying of treatment is planned by the government, they probably do this so these poor people die soon. Her lack of health care is terrible, she resides in Canada which explains alot, Canada doesn't care about there citizens, especially the ones that are unable to work anymore. Signed, Ashamed to be Canadian.
