hi people, I am an australian hiv poz guy in the australian defence force. I would like to ask if someoene has the time. would you be prepared to send an email detailing what the american military policy is on hiv poz personnel?
Im am in the situation where I am being discharged, even though I am asymptomatic, and feel very strongly that what they are trying to do is wrong. So Im taking them (the ADF) to the federal court and fighting it.
It may be beneficial for me to demonstrate in court how the american defence forces treat their personnel....ie what is the policy in the event someone tests hiv poz?
Any help you can give would be very welcome........!
Cheers

Hi Mark, The military policy here is once you've tested positive, you're sent for a complete medical evaluation and "Staged" if the disease does not interfere with you ability to work, the medical board will more than likely recommend "return to duty" with the exception that you're no longer eligible for overseas deployment. hope that helps a little

Hi Mark,
I'm not a military expert but have grown up over seas as an American expat (thus knowing a lot of military too). In general, one is tested for HIV before entering the military. If the tests come up +, he/she won't be let in. But if he/she becomes + once in the military, they usually don't kick anyone out because of it.
I don't know if this helps but I definitely think that you are doing the right thing. Keep fighting for your rights!
Keep me posted on what happens!
Yours, smokeparis
