HELP !! CD4 170 AIDS DIAGNOSIS-- IS THIS THE END?
      #96575 - 04/26/04 07:55 PM

I have been positive and healthy on no meds for the last 8 years. Now my cd4 count which was about 600 is down to 170 and my once undetectable viral load is now detectable. What's the average timeframe a person survives after an AIDS diagnosis ? I want to see whats coming so I can face and fight it head on.

I am NOT a Doctor..just someone in similiar circumstances. Recent AIDS Diagnosis. First off..has your Doctor told you specifically that you have AIDS. My Doctor believes that just because you have the "Numbers" according to the Government doesn't necessarily mean you have AIDS. He goes mostly by Aids Related Illness. He told ME with proper meds I could live another 20 years possibly. He also said he finds a higher problem rate in people who do not actively take a treatment regime. Now that is only what my Doctor says. I will tell you that I have seen with my own eyes people walking around with zero T Cells and they look great.

Good Luck finding any statistics on the timeframe. I couldn't find anything. And for some reason it's almost a taboo subject on the boards. I asked the same question about a month and a half ago with little reponse BBB. A lot of it goes by the individual and the type of lifestyle they lead and attitude. I don't think (myself) that there is any estimate that can be given because of that. We all my share the same illness...but we all are still unique.

Just live each day to the fullest as if it were your last and then it won't matter so much when...

Take Care!!

Yes, there is hope! Although your t-cell count falls below 200 which by CDC definition is full blown AIDS, if your viral load is detectable but not sky high, and you have no opportunistic infections associated with AIDS, I would give you alot of hope, not false hope either! there are SEVERAL treatments available. A friend was given 6 months to live, his count was I believe 3? He is now a long term survivor! Please get on treatment asap and get it under control so you can keep under control and have a long life! Good luck, a 14 year survivor.

RELAX, one set of numbers doesn't mean that much. I first had my T-cells run in 1988 and they were 220. Didn't start meds until 1999 and they were stil in the 200 range. I have had numerous fluctuations over the years from 104 to 459 and have been poz for almost 20 years. Still no significant illness either! I am planning on living at least another 20 years!

There is something wrong here. Have you been going to an HIV specialist every 3-4 months since your diagnosis? You need to monitor your viral load and CD4 count every 3-4 months. The recommendation and all the studies point to starting treatment before your CD4 count falls to 200. However, it's not too bad to start at 170, but for God's sake, get on treatment! And get the finest, most experienced HIV specialist you can. IF you want to survive this illness, take advantage of all the good medications and good care that an experienced person can give. If you don't have a good doc, call the largest AIDS organization in your area and get a recommendation! Or ask here, someone might be seeing a great person near your area!

NO. I know people living with no T-cells., but I don't advice that. I have had a AIDS diagnosis for 7 yrs.You just have to take care of yourself and decide if it may be time for MEDS. All the best.

I have only a rudimentary understanding of AIDS, but I know that the disease lowers your immune response, allowing infections in. If you have no infections, then it is not the end. Please, if you want to talk, my email adress is markj0679@hotmail.com/

Current thinking in the UK - where I live - is that Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) should commence when one's cd4 count drops below 200. Prophylaxis against PCP is also advised (Septrin, Dapsone or other). Diet, excersise and complementary therapies with a successful drug regime should keep you well for some time to come. We tend to emphasise the value of Viral load tests above cd4 counts as an indicator of the speed of the virus's progression. I suggest you check out www.positivenation.co.uk
Good luck mate!

NOOOOOOOO! It's not the end! A friend of my had literally 3 t-cells, was given 6 months to live. That was years ago. He is now on a "cocktail" and doing well. They also saved my life. If one regimen fails, there are others, and research being done constantly. Don't give up yet!
