Homeless
      #93014 - 03/23/04 05:33 PM

I have been hiv positive for 10 years now. I have been lucky health wise. I am now however starting to get sick. I have no one to fall back on I am on my own.

Can anyone out there provide me with some advise so I dont go homeless? I Have read that 60% of people with aids go homeless.

What do people on this board do?

Wait a minute. Why can't you just get treatment? Most people with HIV DO NOT become homeless. Most people with HIV go to a good HIV specialist and get treatment and continue working!

I'm not sure where it is that you live, but it would not hurt to check out the closest hiv/aids project in your state. It may take some persistence on your own part, but there is help available. Many of these places will assess your situation and set you up with a case worker that may not perform miracles however, look at the alternative. It really is a matter of patience, and persistence...I live in South Florida and have a case worker through AIDS project florida who has been overwhelmingly helpful with helping me stay healthy...So check it out. Love be with you honey.

Thankyou for the response and advise. I am really afraid of becoming sick and disabled. As long as I can work I can pay for meds and whatever else comes at me. I am afraid of not tollerating the meds well and missing work in which they will fire me.

I am sorry you are starting to get sick. It really is not a bowl of cherries, it's the pits! I am lucky enough to have my mom to live with, (although I am committed to sharing a house for the next few months which I probably can't afford now) and she has provided for me if she passes away before her life expectancy, or a nice old age. So I can't say I have that worry, even though I'm about to lose my job due to illnesses. But I pray for those that don't have that. I hope there are some HIV/AIDS agencies in your area? Other social service agencies? What about Ryan White fund, other organizations in your state? Honestly? If needed, could you move somewhere if needed to access better resources? I told someone this today, that if I lose insurance I would move.
I hope there are some options for you....I won't shove religion down your throat, but you are in my prayers. Good luck!
"Hope will never let you down". I have been to hell and back
due to HIV/AIDS, I am sending some hope your way.

The problem is that my father was the director of Social Services in my area for many years. He knows everyone and this will embarrass the family. I also worked there for a while.

I Have Been Homeless Many Times new

It is tough, I couldn't get a decent job, lived pay check to pay check on welfare, any slip ups and I was homeless or hungry. Even now I don't have an income (lost disability for travelling to USA), thanks to my GF I have a place to stay of I would be homeless again! I was homeless last time in 2003...

Good luck, if you do wind up homeless, get to a shelter or hostile near you! Find local AIDS orgs and get them to help you outta this jam. Go to a larger city if you need too, NYC has some of the best medical coverage and higher number of poz resources per capita.
