Since being diagnosed with HIV I have experienced folliculitis. It has not responded to the antibiotics given by my dermatologist who seems to have given up on it. I am not on any meds yet. Is this something that we with HIV just have to live with?

In response to your problem with folliculitis...I am HIV+, diagnosed in 1993. One of the first signs was folliculitis. (shingles was second) I think this is a common problem with people and HIV/AIDS. I believe it is systemic in origan. Antibiotics don't always cut it. My physician (University of Wisconsin) treated it with steriods. An injection of cortisol seems to do the trick, but watch out, this treatment is not without side effects. The steriod will make you gain weight (this may be good or it may be bad) and can make you very irritable at times. However, it works incrediblly well on the folliculitis. It completely dissapeared within days. Another option that seems less drastic is using a creme called triamcinolone acetonide ointment USP,0.025%. It can be prescribed by your dermatologist and is prescription only. This ointment contains steriod. There is not the side effects that the injection can cause. I know how awfull it is to have folliculits. The itching can drive you mad and it can appear anywhere on your body. I hope this helps you, but always confer with your doctor. Ask him/her about these treatments. They worked for me. Good Luck. Michael

Hi Been positive since '83. Years with foliculitis 23. My answer isn't terribly scientific, but I use Physohex,(sp?) in my shower two or three times a week, and use an anti-bacterial body wash all the time. The last six months (since starting the above) have been the most relaxing in the last 23 years. Yes I'm a hairy guy and this works somewhat. The main thing is I don't like to take pills unless I absolutely have to. Try anything, but don't stop trying, it will be with you for a long time.
Love Ya; Tim
