SWF,HIV infected through work
      #76875 - 10/26/03 08:31 AM

Hi,

Just checking to see if I'm the only person in this world who contracted this disease through their job. Ironically, I am a Medical Technologist who worked as a supervisor and taught students blood precautions when doing their job. After 13 years and spending 8 yrs at night school while working full time in the hospital, I left to sell medical equipment. I dressed in a business suit and demonstrated Blood Gas Analyzers to Respiratory depts. and doctors (they use arterial whole blood to measure Co2). I should have worn latex gloves when handling the blood but didn't---how stupid of me!
Bottom line is I think there are more Health care professionals like me out there, but they are afraid to come forward because it may jeopardize their job.
Please write if you are in the same situation.
Thanks and stay well!
Kathy

HI Kathy:

Are you sure you were infected that way. You see the skin is very intact and it's extremely hard to get HIV even if blood goes on your skin. The only way I know health workers got HIV was in the emergency room through skirting blood into an eye or mucous membrane....or through a needle prick. Does the cdc know about your case?

Hi and thanks for your response.
I know I got infected this way because I had excluded a guy that I had dated (he got tested) and I would frequently get cuts on my fingers from opening vials or boxes from my job. I came down with the acute phase of the disease and went to many doctors who did not make the diagnosis because they did not think to test for HIV (strange since I told them about my job). I can pin-point the time of infection based upon when I got sick (6mos after exposure). I had 290 Tcells back in 1993 and today because of the medicines and one of the best Infectious Disease doctor's at Hospital of the University of PA, my T cells are above 800 with a non-detectable viral load and I remain healthy.
I don't believe this was reported to the CDC---10 yrs. ago things were different.
Let me know if you have further questions!
Kathy
