Harvesting Herbs

Having successfully grown the various herbs on the windowsill or some in
the garden ,there are a few principles that should be observed when it
comes to harvest time.
Different parts of the herb are gathered at different times and in a variety
of ways. it is advisable to use a shallow, flat-bottomed container so that
the herbs can be placed in a single layer, which prevents damage by bruising.
Obviously, with roots andbulbs, such as garlic, the entire plant is forfeited
at the end of the season, but annual leafy herbs, such as basil, can be
successfully maintained in the garden until late autumn by careful picking
and pruning of leaves.

It is very important to take into account the types, sizes, and the age of
the plant.

Perennial herds, such as sage , thyme, and rosemary, Should not be weakened
by severe pruning or Overstraining of the leaves before winter sets in,
particularly if the plant is small ,or quite young, or only just recently
established.

(When harvesting any plant, in your house or garden , Do not take more than
a maximum of 10-ten percent of the growth otherwise the Shock effect can
be detrimental.)

Careful harvesting of all leafy perennial herds results in more vigorous
leaf production and healthier plants.

Flowers And Bulbs

Herb flowers---chives, marigolds, borage, and chamomile--- should be pick
carefully when they are fully open.

Lavender is best when the flowers have just begun to open.

In all cases avoid old damaged,or wilted specimens.

Place in an open container, uncovered, until needed and do not harvest too
far in advance.

Harvest bulbs, such as garlic,in late summer, when the leaves start to die
off.

Drying Herbs

This is one of the most fun AND popular methods of preservation, and in
some cases it actually improves the flavor of the herbs, especially with bay
leaves.

Brush off any loose soil from the leaves and dust with a soft pastry brush
or similar implement; washing is Necessary only if the leaves are very
gritty.

The easiest procedure is to hang the herbs in small, loose bunches from a
rack in a warm room.
The temperature should not exceed 86%F (30%C) or the essential oils will
evaporate.

Do not let leaves become so dry that they disintegrate into a powder when
touched.
Also, despite the attractive appearance of herbs hanging in bushes ,try
avoid drying them in the kitchen, which is often full of condensation from
cooking.

To prevent dust from from settling on the bunches, place a paper bag over
the herbs leaving the bottom of the bag open to the air

When the leaves are crisp and dry, after about a week (but this depends on
the thickness of the leaf and the warmth of the room), they are ready for
storage.

Strip the leaves whole from the stems and place in a jar, without crushing
them.

After a day, check for condensation inside the jar ; this is a sign leaves
are not yet dry enough.

If condensation is present, remove the leaves for further drying otherwise
the batch will spoil.

Vitamins

How nutrients get to work

Nutrients basically work through digestion.
Digestion is a process of continuous chemical simplification of materials
that enter the body through the mouth.

Materials are split by enzymatic action into smaller and simpler chemical
fragments, which can then be absorbed through walls of the digestive
tract--an open-endedmuscular tube, more than thirty feet long, which passes
through the body--and finally enter the bloodsream.
Known how your digestive system works will clear up, right at the start,
some of the more common confusions about how, when, and where nutrients
operate.

Now lets have some fun can you name that mineral

Now although about eighteen know minerals are required for body maintenance
and regulatory function, recommended Daly dietary al lowness(RDA)have only
been estblihed for six---calcium, iodine,iron, magnesium, phosphorus,and
zinc.

As important as vitamins are, they can do nothing for you without minerals.
I like to call it, vitamins cannot function, cannot be assimilated, without
the aid of minerals.and though the body can synthesize some vitamins, it
can not manufacture a single mineral.

Thanks. When I tested pos in '85, there was nothing to do but panic. Luckily I found a holistic practitioner, turned my life around, incorporated vitamins, supplements, healthy diet, yoga and mediation, and through all the drugs, and all the OI's I've had, I believe the healthy stuff has kept me here at least as much, if not more than the drugs.
I go to my MD for the scientific stuff, and I go to other sources to balance it all out.
