Platelet Count

was diagnosed in Jan 2003 & at that time my viral load was 750,000 and my CD4 was 52. I was also told my platelet count was 116. Since then, after starting meds, my VL has dropped to 92, my CD4 has climbed to 255 BUT my platlets have dropped to 16. My specialist doesn't seem too worried by this, but just tells me to avoid any heavy contact sports or activities that may cause bruising or bleeding. Any body else had this problem? Just looking for information really

Ask one of the docs on this site. I haven't heard of this myself but there are lots of great docs here that can answer. I would ask Ben Young or David Wohl. http://www.thebody.com/experts.shtml

Last time I went looking for info why platelet count drops in some cases of HIV I read that some of your immune cells (macrophages) can become "confused" and attack your own platelets.
