First Lab Results
      #62525 - 04/02/03 08:27 PM

I've been diagnosed for a little over a month now and my first lab results have come back. My CD-4 176 and my VL is 176,500. My doctor wants me to start taking Trizivir. I'm a little leary of starting medication because of side effects but due to my levels I think it's a good idea to consider medication. Does anyone have any advice on other medication that might be suitable with low side effects? Thanks

I don't know about trizivir. There was a recent study that said it wasn't as strong as other medications. http://www.thebody.com/niaid/2003/actg.html

Ask Dr. David Wohl or Dr. Ben YOung http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/Starting/ get a lot of second opinions on this. The first thing you start on is really important. But get on medications asap -- cause otherwise you risk getting an opportunistic infection.
YOu can also call The project inform National HIV treatment line: 800-822-7422 it's free and they can talk with you about your choices. But I would be wary about a trizivir with your cd4 and viral load....it's not a good idea. You should start with a combination with sustiva. Is your doctor really experienced??? Does he or she have a lot of patients? It's really important you see the best HIV specialist you can.

Good luck

Fred

Hi Fred, Thanks for the helpful info, I just posted for Dr. David. I'm a patient with CARES in Sacramento. They treat a large number of HIV patients, my doctor has been treating patients in SF since 95. So I'm not really questioning his plan of action, i'm just questioning if it's the best for me. Thank you again for the info.
