Accident victim HIV+ after blood transfusion
My 19 year old daughter was a victim of a drunk driver. She was on life support for a month, in the hospital for three months, underwent five surgeries, and received 21 units of transfused blood. Now, seven months after the accident, just when she thought this nightmare was over, she has tested positive for HIV. This isn't fair. She did not make choices that put her at risk for HIV. Where can she find support for a young, heterosexual, non-drug using female? Is there anyone else out there lik

There are lots of women like your daughter. Many of them however were infected by men--and often in long term relationships. In addition, many of the women her age have not yet been tested so that they are unaware they are infected! There are heterosexual social groups across the country. Some forming right now--so if there is none in your area you can form one. There are college students on every campus living with HIV but it's still very difficult for them to talk about it with other students. Your daughter could meet a lot of people by becoming a peer educator--just call your local AIDS organization to see if they will train her to be a speaker. Go to the POZ conventions which are across the country in the Spring so she could connect to others. She can also call Women ALive and talk to women with HIV--1-800-554-4876. They are open 11-6 Pacific time Mon, Wed. & Fri. There is also a publication called WORLD which is a confidential publication for women. They have retreats every summer for women, call 510-658-6930. Good Luck! She is not alone.
