I was diagnosed with KS in 1985, but was cleared in 1988, using AZT and interferon. Since then, my only problems have been minor, with most being side effects of the medication. To fight wasting, I started hormone shots in 7/94. I've always have had a good body, but my arms and shoulders seem to have a definition now, that I wasn't quite prepared for. Strangers stop me on the streets to comment. It's weard! Anyway, I'm doing extremely well, and sometimes I feel bad that others with AIDS cannot do as well. Are there others out there like me, into their second decade of full blown AIDS, and still doing great? I write a column for an Atlanta newsletter for the AIDS Survival Project, called Survival News. The column there is called Positive Attitude. My nephew is going to add the column soon on his home page which can be reached at http://mason.gmu.edu/~jstanle!, if anyone is interested. He will call it "Long Term Surviving". I quit work last year, due to fatigue and cardio/myopathy, which is probably a side effect of the interferon. I stay as busy as the fatigue allows as a full time activist here in Atlanta. I do work for the AIDS Survival Project and the local Ryan White Council. Sometimes, it runs me down, but it feels good to see that I can actually have an affect. Anyway, that's the short version of my story. I can be reached at dstanley@america.net. Don't try to sell me anything, as my cash flow is negative, even on disability, but I am interested in how others are successful.
