Access to drugs
      #4781 - 06/02/00 03:11 PM

Hi! I'm trying to get a more realistic feel for people's access to anti-HIV medications and health care. To what extent does your private insurance and/or Medicare cover your medications/health care, and if you have no insurance, how do you get them? If you have Free Care, does this cover your meds? Thank you so much for your answers - it is very important!

I'm writing from British Columbia - and you're probably not going to like my answer.

To begin with, we have universal health care ($35/mon/person). That covers all the doctors; specialists; and if you spend more than $600/year on meds, then the meds are free.

If you're positive, the "cocktails" (all of which are available) come from a central agency - a bit of big brother. I make a phone call; request a refill; and show up two days later and pick them up. I don't show ID; I don't pay for them; I'm not even sure what they cost.

Finally, I'm working, so I have full private insurance which tops up the government one - dental care; eye care; massage therapy; chiropractic; physio.

The only things I pay for are: Vitimans; supplements; and good healthy food.

I'm very lucky to be living here. As far as I can tell, it's the best place to be positive.

Hope this helps.

I live in the United States and when it comes to drug access here on the west coast I think is one of the best I've seen yet. I mean if you don't have any health insurance and are taking meds there are programs such as ADAP (Aids Drug Assistance Program) and some of the community health clinics will help with a little.
Here in the East Bay the Ryan White program is not being funded enough/not getting enough money to help those who really need it. But the other programs in our area are suffering just as well so it is starting to get a little tougher to recieve any assistance for our meds and before there wasn't a problem. Now I am on disability and soc sec and recieving medi-cal so it's that big of a deal for me but I want to help those unfortunate people who can't get any help.
