Oct. 1st, 1997 was the day I received my test results. I had been
having lots of fatigue during the summer. I am a young mother
with two small children, working part time and volunteering at
church. I thought this was the reason for my fatigue. My first
red flag was my CBC which showed leukopenia and low platelets. I
went thru a series of bloodt test trying to rule out Lupus. I
finally asked the doctor to check for HIV since I had been a
nurse for many years. I was shocked and devastated when I learned
the news. I had been infected for over 12 years and I imagine it
was by an incident at work in Puerto Rico. The miracle for me is
that my husband and children tested negative. I am now struggling
with the side effects of AZT, epivir and Viracept. I've been
having some dizzy spells and continue to have fatigue. I'm
hanging in there. I am a minister and my faith sustains me as do
my family and even strangers. Thanks for listening to my story.
