It's great that you can support him! Just make sure his meat is well cooked and he eats balanced good meals with fresh vegetables and he takes a multiple vitamin daily. He should drink juices not just soda and try to get exercise.

Just be there for him. But also protect yourself! And don't treat him like a sick person. He's a person LIVING with HIV.

I am curious as to why your husband ended up developing pneumonia especially if he already knew he was positive. Was his CD4 count not being monitored? In any case, with today's medicine it's proven that he'll be able to live a virtually normal lifestyle with hopefully not too many side effects. Many doctor's would even optimize his physicians initial prognosis in saying that many people with HIV have close to if not the same life expectancy potential as non infected people. It sounds like you are on the right track. My prayers are with you both.
Take Care :)

You know, you cannot survive with HIV without seeing an HIV specialist! This is crucial! Convince him that this is the only thing that will keep him alive!!!!!!! He needs his t cell count every three months and his viral load count! And he needs to see a specialist who has lots of other patients with HIV.

Doctor is absolutly correct. There is no reason he can't come back from this and get his health back through medication. 3 years ago, my husband was in the hospital. At that point he was much closer to death than life. He got better enough to release and thankfully there was a T-20 trial just starting up. He was able to get into it. Between the T-20 and the other HIV meds, Kalatra, Epivir, and Zerit, he got his health back. After the trial he dropped the T-20, but has stayed on the other meds. His CD4 count is over 200 and his viral load is undectable. You would never guess he was as ill as he was.

Just remember it takes time to bounce back from where your husband is. There will be good days and bad days. Don't allow yourself to take over doing everything for him. It's an easy thing to do when they have been so ill. It's not good for you and it's not good for them.

As far as food? I didn't quite understand the end of your post. Just like anyone, a healthy diet does wonders. However I'm sure he has lost a lot of weight and probably doesn't have much of an appeite. So try getting him to drink a protein shake or one of the shakes that are high in calories. You can find the mixes at health food stores.

Hope this helps.

J.
