i have been on zerit, epivir and crix for more than one year. i have lipodystrophy (no more buttocks, fat loss in face and a paunch). I have always been an avid exerciser -- my doc has told me to STOP exercising, that it worsens the situation. i told her i cannot live without exercising -- it is a drug that keeps me sane. (my viral load is less than 26 and my T4 is over 800, which i attribute to my lifestyle and exercise.) does anybody have any experience or advice on this issue. Please feel free to email me privately if you prefer.

I don't have any info on the loss of fat on your face and loss of buttocks. But the paunch on your stomach is very common among Crixivan users (or most of the protease inhibitors). That's called "buffalo hump" or "camel's hump" (though the name came around because a mass of fat begins to build on the back of your neck.) But Crix is notorious for these fat formations all over your body. Not sure why your doc said exercise makes it worse (it doesn't!). She should have said instead it won't make any difference (in getting rid of the paunch). This fat is of the fiberous type as opposed to normal body fat, and in 99.9% of the cases, the only way you can get rid of it is through surgery. A couple of the newer Protease Inhibitors have reported FEWER amounts of fat build up, but the constant fact seems to be that this is true for almost all protease inhibitors.

I think your doctor is quite wrong suggesting that exercise worsens the condition. I suffer also from lypodystrophy and have found great results in balancing my body and fat through exercise. I've developed back some buttocks and flatten my tummy to a regular size. Don't give up on exercise, exercise is great for your body and mind as you probably know already.

I am on Zerit, Epivir and Viracept. I also experienced fat displacement -- added fat to waist, neck, fat depleted from face, legs. HOWEVER when I began swimming regularly I significantly got rid of my paunch. I did not add anything back to my cheeks or legs, and my neck area maybe lost only a little, but I was very pleased to slim down in my waist again. So I think your doctor is totally wrong about exercise, with the caveat that I'm on Viracept, not Crix.
