Well I finally got around to having a bone density test. I had one many years ago and all was good but it's been many many MANY pills since then . And since I cannot find any documentation about tests done on those with long term medications I figure it's time to see for myself if there is any changes. Only one problem, I am a female. And for you guys that don't see how that is a problem, well let me give a brief explanation. Our bodies and how they react is different than yours. And although I have not gone through menopause, there is whats called peri-menopause. Sorry guys. Just because its got the word men in it you can't share in it. Not even if your a " queen " It's just ours and ours alone. Should make us feel special.......NOT. But thats awhole other topic/website lol. But any info from any long term med user is greatly appreciate male or female. Thanks you all.

My doc has put my girlfriend and I on Caltrate Plus to try to protect us from osteo and other bone issues. She says that most ARV is known to have long-term effects on bones and joints because it interferes with calcium uptake. She feels that the calcium, minerals and vitamin D in a good supplement, such as Caltrate Plus, will help ward this off. She is particularly concerned for my GF because of her being female and she is probably going to be hitting menopause in the not to distant future.
We are on the Atripla meds, and our doc is not as familiar with long-term data on that cocktail, so this is a bit of guesswork from studies on people on older ARV recipes.

Well my tests came back that my bones are fine. But they sure dont feel like it at times. Guess it's just one of those things we got to just live with. I am looking into getting an epidural for my back. But the most difficult thing is to find someone that accepts medicaid as my secondary insurance . They take my medicare but mention also medicaid and alll of a sudden they won't see you .

Have you tried changing and sleeping on a floor mat? I know it sounds crazy, but in the US I had terrible back problems and pain. I spent a fortune on fancy mattresses, but nothing helped. Acupuncture gave me some relief, but it didn't last more than a week or two.
After I moved here, and started sleeping on a floor mat or Asian style mattress, which is hard as a rock, literally, my back problems disappeared. It was like a miracle. Now, when I visit the US, if I sleep on a western mattress, my back aches again. So, when I travel, I sleep on the floor and I never have a problem.
Anything may be worth a try.... You never know!

I switched to a sleepnumber bed . And was able to see where my Hot spot pressure points are.Ahad matterss is a big no no for me. What causes my main problem is that I have buldging discs in my back and one of my vertabrae is shifted back due to a ice skating accident, and over 20 years of bent over as a dental assistant. I'm going to see about epidurals on wednesday . I've had them before and did well. I think the constant aches is just draing me a bit.

Hi RP I am a 57 year old hetro guy that has been diagnosed + for 4 years. Living in Australia we get very good care and government support.
As part of the regular health checks I was required to get a bone density scan that identified me as having a high risk of fracture. 7 months ago I was put on Fosamax 70mg once a week. I have not had any problems with this drug and will determine if my bone density has improved in about 12 - 18 months. I guess the question is, was the low bone density caused by genetics, diet or the HIV infection . I don't have an answer but am greatfull for the intervention.Feel free to contact me for more info if you like. allways happy to assist if I can
