This is a good question.... I took out a life insurance policy 8+ years ago, long before getting stuck with this. I still pay my premiums. I have not checked my policy to see what it says about HIV. I know that they did check for HIV at the time I signed up, as well as screened for drugs and nicotine. I haven't even thought about it until now.... UGH!

According to our expert Lynn Franzoi:
"There are a few life insurance companies that will issue limited amounts of life insurance to HIV+ individuals: New York Life through AARP for individuals eligible for AARP, up to $15,000 Mutual of Omaha - up to $10,000 Physicisan's Life - up to $10,000 Gerber Life - limited amounts ($5,000 - $10,000) Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company (except in New York)."
she also says:
"Most insurance companies do not extend coverage to HIV positive individuals, except in limited amounts. However, answer all questions honestly. Failure to do so could result in paying the premiums only to have the policy rescinded at a later date. Falsely responding to questions is insurance fraud."
and here are other FAQs about life insurance.

Yeah, I feel you!
Better spray yourself with dog sled repellant! ;-)
I wonder about my life insurance now... I was clearly negative when I took it out, but I wonder if my new status changes it? I don't want to call up my broker and say, "Hey, I was wondering..." because that might set some bells off....
Let sleeping dogs sleep?

just be sure if asked, like bartleby stated, its insurance fraud if not. i would think if you werent when starting its not, unless they have an updated form you need. i would find out but not use your name just as an iquisitive person asking. good luck pit. take care

Unfortunately, life insurance providers can turn down an HIV positive person because the disease increases the likelihood of dying prematurely. Group life insurance may be an option worth pursuing in this case, because group insurance policies forbid refusal of insurance to one member and won’t single them out for pre-existing conditions. Even though group life insurance offers coverage for smaller amounts, they will at least cover final expenses. The longer you have taken medications effectively and lived to show for it, the higher the chances are that you will be approved. If you have already locked in term life insurance rates and are later diagnosed (and the carrier cannot prove fraudulent dealings on your part), the carrier will have to insure you despite the illness. Attach a guarantee-of-insurability rider if you want to continue coverage for an additional cost. You could also look at No-Medical-Exam insurance, but this is quite expensive. Hope you find something soon!

It is a nice idea to prepare for your life in the future in getting a life insurance. What did you get? Term or whole life insurance? Either way is okay
