dr visits every 6 months....
      #259576 - 12/22/11 05:44 PM

my ID told me on my visit monday that i no longer need to see him every 3 months. my initial reaction was to clap & wiggle around doing a slightly weird happy dance while sitting on the table... but as the days have gone by i just kinda feel like my special blankie has been ripped from me. he explained that i have maintained an UD status for over 6yrs, my CD4 hasnt dropped below 800 in over 2yrs, my % is amazing... so he's agreeing with the new CDC guidelines for only needing to visit every 6 months. he said anything that happens in 6 month will not be anthing different or worse than in 3 months. hes been an amazing dr, hes been upfront, honest & very supportive - as well as all the staff. i guess i just feel nervous & kind of scared all over again... like im having the "but what ifs" - he told me if I CHOOSE to come every 3 months, thats on me.. but he really sees no problem at all with seeing me every 6 months.

Anyone else have thoughts... or recently started test driving the every 6 months visit?

Man, I wish I could be a 6 monther. I am so sick of the every three month schedule. I've seen the doc more times in this first year of being positive than I have in my last 5 yrs before I was diagnosed. (No that is not an exaggeration, it's the truth) I have an appointment next week even which will make for the 9th time this year (at first he wanted to see me every month which lasted till june) Have had one cold I went to see him about as well in that time.

Anyway, your doc is right, there really isn't much that can go wrong by waiting six months to pull labs. It means you are healthy. I mean non hiv positive people go once a year, so look at it that way. Enjoy the time off, if you feel ill then by all means see the doc, but otherwise enjoy!

kicker... i know exactly what you mean. the first 2 years seems like an endless stream of labs, visits, vaccinations, etc... ive had all my hep vaccs. 2 rounds of pneumo vac, ive always gotten a flu shot, TB, DTap and so on & so forth. ive been extremely compliant & have always done exactly what Dr Rod has said... i have asked this man more questions in the past 6 years than i have collectively over my entire life.... i guess it just seems strange. i in no way want to seem like im gloating or seem ungrateful - honest. it has been a a very strange ride the past few years. i can honestly say that since being diagnosed & doing EXACTLY what he says i have only gotten sick 1 time - and that was walking pneumonia 3-4 years ago. i took Levaquin for 3 days, my face swelled to the size of a jack o lantern & he told me to stop taking it & "see what happens". within 4 days i was back to my old self. i had a horrible cough for bout 4 weeks, but nothing Robitussin & some cough drops couldnt handle. i told him i would still come in March - 1) to help minimize my $850 out of pocket for my 1st med refill (i do the 3 month mail order) & 2) for peace of mind. i guess if no one replies with a negative (no pun intended. LOL) reply, i'll give it a whirl & see him in September when its time for PPD & the flu shot. so weird that i have anxiety after all these years....

I didn't think you were gloating or ungrateful. I can see where it would be a little scary with all that gets beaten into us about keeping up with appointments and medications and the such. We are trained to think we need to be in constant contact with the doctors who treat us or risk getting really sick. Actually hearing that they are recommending it for some patients is great news! It means we have gotten to a point where we are moving away from a critical illness to a more manageable one.

Also hearing that your doc has decided to allow you to only see him twice a year means you have conquered the beast. You are doing excellent and have whipped it into shape. So bravo to you. I am sure I will get to that point as well, my complaint is more that I feel like I live at the doctor's office. I never was one for doctors to begin with. Not some macho thing, just I find most of them really stupid. (Most refuse to say, "I don't know" which to me is a sign of stupidity). I am however really happy for you and think it is great news.

I wouldn't worry about any nay sayers, if you get any, it will probably be from someone who isn't at the right place to see how great that is.

all the great news that has recently posted about the HIV vacc starting human trials in january... msnbc with reports on the effectiveness of HAART & reduction of transmission... finally sems like we're about to get a handle on this beast. like they just might have figured it out. oh happy happy day that would be to get back a HIV- result. that would certainly warrant a happy wiggle dance! LOL! i cant even imagine what it would be like... id probably faint!

Interesting to read the above posts. I'm also on the twice a year program now and can relate to the above post about feeling a little uneasy at first with only twice a year but now after being on this program for a year now I see it differently. As one poster mentioned, I feel I have conquered the beast and now go in for "maintenance" check. My anxiety level has gone way down since only twice a year. Honestly I do get a tiny bit stressed when I see my doc, but I call prior to every appointment to get the results of my labs just so there are no surprises. I truly believe this such a manageable disease that there should be no fear. Ofcourse i hope there is cure someday, but I hope the next big breakthrough is one pill a day, with NO side affects, then maybe onto no more pills and just a shot in the arm once a week, then maybe once a month. I've asked my doc about this and he believes this would be the progression of breakthroughs but would take some time. I believe it too. If you look at where we were 29 years ago and where we are today, I just have such an optimistic view of things getting much easier as far as medication goes, less frequency, easier on our bodies, and less expensive with possibly generic options available.Thank god for insurance and programs like Ryan White out there. I have to say I feel lucky and blessed. Peace and Love to everyone.

Enjoy the vacation ! There are times when I wonder why I go to the dr every 3 months, it's always the same results. So just enjoy the fact that your getting a break for awhile. I'm sure you know your body enough to tell if there was a problem. And if so your doctor would be morre than happy to see you . So don't worry , just enjoy life....( I'm jealouse lol )

Hi!

Congratulations on your excellent and stable labs! It is excellent news and a wonderful way to begin the new year.

I am in the same situation you are in. My October CD4 count was over 900 after beginning the Atripla meds in March and rising from the 420's. My CD4's were over 600 by the end of June and 924 by the start of October. My doc said that if the numbers were the same in January, when my next labs are scheduled, then I could go to having labs and check-ins every six months. I contacted a specialist in CA and they agreed that that was fine, as long as there were no changes in my health.

So, I think this is a good plan. It helps save some of the costs and tension we have to deal with, but I will go in and get counts if I feel the need to. Overall, I think it shows we are doing very well and have a happy, healthy future to look forward to.

Cheers!

~PIT

IM HAPPY YOU ARE GETTING A CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING BETTER WITH YOUR TIME, INSTEAD OF HAVING TO RUN BACK AND FORTH TO THE DR. IM NOT QUITE THERE YET, AND HAVE A DR DATE COMMING UP.
I HOPE I CAN FINALLY GET A HOLIDAY FROM THE DOC, NOT THAT I DONT LIKE GOING, BUT, TRUTH BE TOLD I WISH I COULD FORGET ABOUT IT FOR 6 MONTHS, NOW IF THAT WOULD HAPPEN I WOULD WELCOME IT. SOON I WOULD HOPE. BUT UNTIL THEN I WILL KEEP ON GOING, IM JUST WORRIED BECAUSE 6 MONTHS IS A LONG TIME. BUT IF YOU MAINTAIN YOUR STANDARD WAY OF LIFE AND DONT TRY DOING TO MUCH, OR START BAD HABITS YOU SHOULD BE FINE, ENJOY THE NEW YEAR, ONE WITHOUT SO MANY DR VISITS.
