swollen lip nd Herpes Zoster
      #259333 - 12/04/11 08:04 AM

On Wednesday I was just sitting and chatting with my colleague at work when I felt a funny sensation on the left part of my bottom lip, and then my lip just started swelling . I looked ridiculous like half my lip had been stung by bees. Three hours later the swelling was coming down and after about 5 hours my lip was back to mormal. Three days later(today) I was dressed and all ready leaving for church when I had the same thing happen, but this time it was on the right half of my top lip. I took x2 allergex(tablets for allergic reactions)
This is getting me worried coz I don't know what it could be, I read that the Herpes virus can sometimes cause swollen lip. I have no allergies as far as I know. Does anyone know anything bout this ..pls share...

Hi,

From the reading I am finding, a herpes infection is not going to flare and then disappear within a few hours. HSV-1 attacks the mouth and lips, taking a few days to show itself from the time you have strange sensations. It then takes days or weeks to subside and go away.

I am thinking that it sounds like an allergy of some kind. Food allergies often affect the lips and face, coming on very suddenly, as you described. Could you be developing a food allergy?

Another thought; did you recently change or start using hand creams or some other topical cosmetic that you could be developing an allergy to? Perhaps a new laundry detergent or fabric softener?

Also, understand that antihistamines interfere with ARV/HAART. The only allergy medication that is ARV/HAART safe is Allegra (fexofenadine HCl).
