Is this company discriminating?
      #257474 - 09/13/11 03:56 PM

I sent an email to a company that sells a Balanced Nutrient dense meal. I wanted to make a bulk order of this meal so that I can offer it to people living with HIV/AIDS in prisons and rural communities. We also asked this company if they can give out hampers. Which we can hand out. This is what they said, " I understand you want to make an impact on peoples lives but we also concerned that our product if marketed incorrectly could be stigmatized as an AIDS product instead of a balanced nutrient dense food"

Now I know many people who are HIV positive and others with AIDS who receive these packs from government hospitals others buy them from the supermarket. Am I crazy to feel we are being discriminated? We buy the product but the company seems to me like it doesn't want to be be associated or 'stigmatised as an AIDS products"

Am I over reacting?

I would reply with something to the following:

I appreciate your hesitation to be associated with such an illness, I would imagine it would be horrorible publicity to be seen making a difference in the health and well being of those who are most in need.

How would you suggest we go about offering your product so we can avoid any embarassing marketing for you?

I would also forwrard the letter to the local news and the ceo. Fight fire with political tactics

yeah, i agree with you. and no you're not overreacting. that's blatant discrimination and their desire not to be stigmatized just adds to HIV stigma. anybody can eat their products. people living with HIV included!

also, kicker makes a good suggestion. stick it to them!

i would bring it into a different light, using hiv/ aids. these meals offer some nutritional value, and those who need it most are those with hiv, aids. so they make it so much easier for these people, why wouldnt any company use that as a basis for a healing aspect or a good promotion, versus being misrepresented and only seen as greedy?
