I have been reading a lot of posts about Atripla and weight gain and the same info keeps coming back that Atripla does not cause weight gain. Well, I feel this is false information because a lot of hivers claim the same condition of weight gain with Atripla....I have been diagnosed in 2007 and have been on Atripla since then. I am undetectable and my cd4 is in the 700's....don't get me wrong, I am not bothered about taking this medication...it saved my life. I just want some clarification about the weight gain. I am a beautiful 45 year old and have put on close to 20 pounds since taking these meds...no matter what I am not changing my meds...I watch what I eat and I excercise everyday..soi why is there still weight gain? If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated!!!

My doctor explained it this way:
When you have a higher viral load, your body is constantly expending energy (calories) fighting the virus. Once treatment is started and the virus is brought under better control, your body no longer needs to expend the same energy fighting the virus. If you consume the same number of calories, and do not burn them off in other ways such as exercise, the (now) excess calories will be stored as fat.
This is different from "abnormal" fat deposits that many taking the older regimens experienced where fat formed humps on back or under stomach muscles, etc. He says that is not generally seen in patients taking Atripla. (As of last year at least when we spoke...)
Judging from the many men in my office, most seem to start carrying that spare tire as early at 30 year old, and by 45, I would guess the vast majority look to have put on some serious weight.

Thanks for the explaination man. It really helped me better understand what I'm dealing with.
Now, I suppose I should get up from this computer, throw away my chocolate Twinkie and head for the jogging trail.

mimilove I have been on the Atripla for just about two years,i have gained weight within the last eight months, but i contribute my weight gain to the fact that i stopped smoking,i just as yourself spend anywhere from three to four days a week in the gym.I would like to think that my little bit of weight gain is from good health.eating properly and just taking good care of myself since i have been told i was HIV+ three years ago, well i guess we just have to exercise a little harder
