Before I tested positive, I could never understand why anyone would want to have an HIV birthday. However, my HIV birthday is October 16th - also 7 years. In the beginning, I didn't think that I would be able to get through this but I have since learned to appreciate life. I now say that HIV will eventually take my breath but I refuse to let it take my life! Good luck in your continuous journey.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You've lived 7 more years. Now you just have the rest of your life. Hopefully it will be a long and productive life.

I don't know when my "HIV Birthday" is. When I first tested positive WAY back in the mid-80's people had a life expectancy of maybe 3 to 5 years. Noone ever thought to have to remember when one tested positive. I do remember the month - August. I had gone to dinner with a friend. Between the salad and the entree I excused myself from the table, ran down 2 blocks to the clinic, got my results, and ran back. We went to see the new Elvira movie that night. Post test counseling at the time was "I'm sorry to tell you, but...."

I don't think I've ever gotten depressed over having tested positive. I don't see a stigma attached to this disease for me. I understand that most people do. But, to me it all works out to how you accept yourself as to how you'll accept this disease. And, that's all it is - a disease.

You are probably healthier now. People with HIV (in the U.S.A. and other countries) go to see a doctor regularly. It makes it possible to catch other maladies more readily. Look at your nearest non-positive neighbor. How often does he or she go to the doctor? I go about 4 times a year.

Keep up with your current treatment, if any. See your doctor when you have an appointment. Not just when you "feel sick". The best course of action for a disease like HIV is to be proactive in its care and treatment. Get it before it gets you.

I thought I was the only one who did that. I call it my anniversary. I have a big party and celebrate with my family and friends. Mine is coming up in February and it will be 6 years. My cd4 count is 1375 and undectable. I'd say that is a hell of a lot to celebrate!!!!

HIV is a part of me, but it does not define me!!!
