      #246246 - 06/21/09 08:29 PM

I'm curious how many of you --

1. Have experienced easily forgetting things or have trouble learning new things

2. Have a hard time with math

3. Have trouble paying attention for a long period of time

4. Have trouble finding the right words to get your points across

5. Has your family or friends noticed these changes in you?

cehck out this website for some more info in this topic.

I've been losing words a lot lately,it scares me sometimes,I'll know what I want to say but just can't remember the word. The others, well I've always been forgetful, can't tell you how many keys I've lost in my life time, and math was never my subject. So far nobody has notice the word problems yet but I have been struggling with it,especially at work.

I mentioned all the things you listed to my doctor with my last visit. He discounted it all. I am also at a loss to learn any new task. I got easily frustrated and confused. I even got lost at one point downtown. I know downtown very well. I am on Atripla. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. You are not alone. When I applied for Social Security and mentioned all you have listed it didn't seem to make a difference either. I got denied.

Your doctor is an idiot. HIV causes memory loss as a result of damage done to nerve cells by chemicals released when HIV kills certain cell bodies found mainly in the brain. HIV does not only effect CD4 cells; it also effects other cell bodies found in the brain.

Certain AIDS meds also causes mitochondrial cells in the liver to change leading to mitochrondial dementia.

Too bad about the Social Security Administration. You should go in for some testing on your cognitive functions and have a spinal tap done to see if there is HIV in your spinal fluid and more importantly to see if there are indicators that you have an infection in your brain.

With those tests and my history of PCP, I was granted Social Security in 22 days.

You should look at the website I have added to my fiorst post.

I feel for you. My cognitive functions are so impaired that I cannot drive, learn new things, remember recent events, multi-task, handle stress amongst other symptoms.

It took me two years to get a diagnosis that I had the initial stages of HIV Associated Dementia (HAD), which is also called HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND), or Minor Motor Cognitive Disorder (MMCD).

You need to hire an advocate to get your Social Security approved. I assume you are not working as that is a threshold event for any disability award. Again my deepest sympathies for your symptoms and your SS denial.

The experts says that the HIV virus attacks and progressively destroying the immune system. The HIV virus can directly infect the brain and can also weaken the immune system, allowing other infections to enter the brain and cause encephalitis. The resulting brain damage may be visible on MRI as generalized brain atrophy (shrinkage) and also visibly damaged subcortical areas. The behavioral symptoms parallel dementia - indeed, the condition is often called the AIDS-dementia complex.

i'd attribute it most to the meds and to depression. To deny it, would be to deny that meds and depression have such side effects, which they clearly do.

If you're just going to accept the fact that every little ailment is the result of hiv, then you're fulfilling your own prophecy.
