hi everyone. going to begin treatment for the first time. have maintained really healthy numbers for 5 years now - 360 tcell and viral load has never risen above 16000 but %'s are are falling a bit and platelets are low and as a result i'm having to make decisions as to which treatment to start with. my doc is leaning towards atripla but it's the sustiva part that seems scary. i have no resistance - a wildtype - and i know there's lots of options for me but if anyone can offer some feedback or wisdom on the subject i'd appreciate it. beginning is daunting enough but i just not sure how i'll react to sustiva. any thoughts?

I can't help as I've never been on Atripla or Sustiva,I just wanted to say you're in the right category.Good luck with starting meds I know it can be scary in the beginning.

one question you should ask yourself is "are you prone to depression?" as the sustiva part plays havoc with your mind. Wierd dreams, feeling of being stoned, etc.. I was handling it well until the depression snuck in..
My pharmasist said that the different meds effect different areas, they either effect the mind or they effect the digestive track. So do you want diahrea, or potential psycadellic dreams and depression.
I know this is just a very basic way to look at the meds, but you have to live with the side effects as well.

I have been on Atripla for two years. Initially I had a "imbalanced feeling" when I got up at night and it also snockered me as far as making me sleepy. Yes, the dreams are vivid, sometimes funny, and other times very colorful. After a while the symptoms seemed to calm down. They do recommend you take it on an empty stomach. I notice if I eat close to or while I am taking Atripla the effects are much stronger (because of the Sustiva). The best thing to do is take it at night time so you can be home when whatever effects kick in. I take mine between 6 and 7pm now because it makes me have hot flash type symptoms that are tough when you are trying to sleep. All in all, it has worked well; my t-cells elevated 120 points after just 4 weeks and my viral load went from 17,900 to 54 in just 4 weeks. Keep in mind that anything you take may have some side effects; its just a matter of what will work for you. I hope this helps!!! Bernadine (Bernie)
