Insurance and changing jobs...
      #239939 - 06/14/08 06:02 AM

hello all,

i'm a 28 year old male diagnosed with HIV a little less than a year ago, extremely sick and tired of my current job and feeling a little lost as to what steps i need to take before i start a new job as it pertains to my insurance. i was reading online that there are certain clauses and time frames that one must wait before the new insurance provider of the new job will cover a pre-existing condition, i.e. hiv.

so i am needing to know exactly who am i supposed to talk to about this at my current job/insurance provider and the future new job ins provider without revealing too much of my personal information and maybe hindering myself from getting the new job.

i just don't want to feel stuck and miserable at any job simple because i am afraid to lose my benefits. i am currently taking Atripla for the HIV and i am also on a year long Hep C treatment plan. I highly doubt that the Health Dept treats those in need with the meds and regimen that a private specialist would provide...i feel like i am simple working at this job to help pay for my meds and i am just working to stay alive, yet i feel like i'm dying from misery on the inside.

in a nut shell, i am stuck, lost and confused...just seeking some direction as to where i should start...thank u all in advance for ur time and blessed !

Say you want change, but in order to change, you must go through change.

I am worried about this same issue. I would like to change jobs sometime in the next year and I worry about losing insurance.

My first suggestion is to talk to your doctor. Mine knew a lot about insurance and he was able to give me some great advice.

He told me that moving from a group policy in one company to a group policy in another company is no problem. He said they can't ask you about preexisting conditions. Most large companies tend to have group insurance policies. He also said if I left my job, I could take the COBRA option for up to 18 months and then join another group policy with no problems. If I ever had a gap in insurance (no coverage in a group policy or COBRA) then a new employer could ask me about preexisting conditions.

He said I may have trouble if I try to go to work for a smaller company. They may not have a group policy. He said staying with a large company is probably best.

I hope this helps. This is my understanding about how insurance works after discussing it with my doctor. Please talk with your doctor or other insurance specialist to get all the details. I know the local hiv support group in NY offers a seminar on insurance issues. See if a local hiv group is in your area.
