Finally got my CD4 back
      #239718 - 06/04/08 10:52 PM

My doctor's office finally tracked down my "missing" CD4 from when I had my labs done 5/15. As I said in another post, my viral load was undetectable for the first time. Even better news - my CD4 is up to 505 - it had fallen to 222 and I started meds late January. So after a little more than 3 full months on meds, it more than doubled! It definitely gives me the encouragement to stay on my medications - they ARE working!

That is very good news. I hear that some people don't have any symptoms or complications even when there CD4 count is under 200, did you have complications when your CD4 count was low? If not that is great, if so did those complications or symptoms go away once you CD4 count doubled? Thanks.

Yes it is. The lab we use puts normal between 500 and 1100. Way to go!

low tcell count = syptoms??? new
      #239753 - 06/06/08 06:41 PM

mrs B,
i had 51 tcells when diagnosed which fell to 30 just before i started meds. I never go so much as a minor cold for several years prior and have only had one 2-day bug since.

i have a a couple questions: how maany meds do you take a day and when? and how does the CD4 count and viral count work? which one should be higher to have the virus undetectable? im new to all this an im trying to learn from everyone here on all aspects of HIV/AIDS.

Most people take a combination of drugs, usually one from each of the main groups. Protease inhibitor (PI), Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor(NNRTI) and a Nucleoside/Nucleotide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NRTI).

Sometimes Norvir is added as a second PI to boost the drug levels of another PI. Some drugs are in a combination pill that requires less pills, such as Atripla When they are taken depends on what you are taking and what the directions are.

The goal is to get the viral load (count of actual virus in your blood) down to undetectable while increasing your CD4 count.

dear USN. i take 3 pills once a day, everyday at the same time with some food. the medicine i take requires food in your system because it needs an acidic environment to work right. the meds fight off the HIV (keep it from replicating and killing off more tcells) so after a while (depending on how high your viral load was when you started meds) if successful (and lots of folks are) the person becomes undetectable or has <50 copies of HIV per drop of blood (a standard HIV test that measures anything over 50 copies of HIV per drop of blood can not detect that the person is HIV positive) so then the person's tcell count can start to build up again. I've heard (from my doctors) that usually people who start with very low tcell counts gain new tcells at a much slower rate than someone with a greater number of tcells, but of course everyone is different.
