NAUSEA!!!

I posted this in the Treatment Forum, but I don't think many people check there, so I'm reposting it in Living with HIV.
I started on Combivir and Sustiva on Saturday, because my CD4 had fallen to 222. I feel nauseous all the time - just kind of queasy. Anyone have any ideas how to deal with this? I'm picking up a prescription for Phenergan, but wondered if anyone has any other ideas that might work.
Thanks!

dj, Are you taking any food when you take this med? I am on the same combo(love it) but I at night can get nauseas if I eat certain things to close to taking my meds. Try making sure you have an empty stomach 1 hour before or you can try just taking some crackers when you take it. That might help. How do you like it otherwise? Are you over the houlicinations? That lasted me only one night.

I am on Sustiva and Epzicom, but I think I remember having nasea at first when I first started my combo. Fran's ideas are great. Currently I am dieting, I hate it and I am ready to eat my own arm. LOL.. So my meals are small and I don't eat after 8pm, see if that helps. I hope you feel better soon.. D

Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation • International News Number of HIV-Positive Blood Donors in Japan Reaches Record High in 2007
January 24, 2008
The number of blood donors in Japan who tested positive for HIV reached a record high of 102 in 2007, according to preliminary data released on Wednesday by the Japanese Red Cross Society, Kyodo News/AOL reports. The report -- which was submitted to a Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry committee -- showed that the number of HIV-positive donors in 2007 increased by 15 compared with 2006 and surpassed the previous record of 92 in 2004. The number also exceeded 100 for the first time since 1986, when the HIV antibody test was introduced for blood donors. The report showed that the number of blood donors per 100,000 living with HIV also reached a record high of 2.06 in 2007. The number of total blood donors in the country reached its lowest level of about 4.9 million last year.
The Osaka prefecture saw the largest increase, with 26 cases, followed by 17 cases in Tokyo. Six of the 102 HIV-positive donors tested negative for the virus in preliminary blood antibody tests but later were diagnosed as HIV-positive in confirmation tests, the report said. A ministry official said the record number could be because of an increase in blood donors seeking HIV tests via blood donation. "To prevent the possibility of the virus spreading, the ministry is urging the public to refrain from blood donation for such purposes," the official said. The society does not plan to inform donors of their test results because the tests are designed to prevent the virus from spreading through donated blood products, Kyodo News/AOL reports (Kyodo News/AOL, 1/23).

What are NAT, DNA, RNA and PCR tests? HIV tests that detect the genetic material of HIV itself (rather than antibodies or antigens) are known as PCR tests. PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction and is a common way of testing for a variety of different organisms. The overall process of extracting and amplifying the genetic material of an organism (in this case HIV) and then testing for it with a PCR test is called Nucleic-acid Amplification Testing or NAT. NAT tests generally take two forms: DNA PCR tests and RNA PCR tests.
RNA PCR tests are most frequently used for screening blood donations and donor organs for HIV, while DNA PCR tests are used for testing newborn babies born to HIV positive mothers. Both types of test can be used to measure the amount of virus that is present within a person's body (when they will usually be referred to as 'viral load' tests). NAT is sometimes also offered for diagnosing individuals, but because it is costly and complicated to perform, antibody testing is far more common in testing clinics.
NAT generally gives positive results much sooner than standard antibody testing would, making it useful in situations where early diagnosis is necessary. An RNA PCR test will produce a positive test result within two to three weeks. A DNA PCR test will provide positive results within three to four weeks (sometimes sooner). As long as the recommended amount of time has elapsed before taking the test (people taking the test for personal diagnosis should ask their testing clinic if they are unsure), the test will be able to give a very accurate result. False positive results are more common than false negatives due to the PCR test's sensitivity, so all positive results must be double checked using a standard antibody test.

I switched from Atripla to Trivizir(sp?) -and was so nauseous I switched back - I felt rotten. I hope it is just your body getting used to the drugs - if so, it should end soon. Otherwise you may want to look into other options. Good luck! Florida69 - have a great trip and try not to eat any body parts - your or anyone else's - hahahaha Dieting is a drag - I wish you multitudes more self-discipline than I have!

Hey dj,
When I started on Atripla, I had some nausea but switched treatment (for other reasons) nine days later, so I don 't really know how long it would have lasted.
I wish I could help, and I hope it's just your body's initial reaction. Hang in there!

I'm on Atripla ..same as Leonardo....Sustiva is one ingredient. For now, take the Phenergan about 30 min to 1 hour before your dose, but also the crackers are a great idea. Try bland stuff when you eat ..in my RN world we recommend the BRAT diet...bananas, rice, applesauce, toast....stuff like that, doesn't have to be the exact same stuff. Take fluids a tablespoon at a time 10 minutes apart...and after you take your med sit and relax for a while. Sometimes when you are up and about it may make you a bit more nauseated. Good luck and let us know if you need anything. OH...and there is a crazy person on this board right now using multiple names...I know you'll figure out who..just ignore the insane rantings and ravings. Take Care..Bernie

I think I've discovered that dairy products too close to bedtime, or even taking Sustiva with milk, aggravates the nausea. I'm doing better the past day or two - so hopefully things will continue to improve. I am taking the Combivir twice a day, and it doesn't seem to really bother me unless I take it on a completely empty stomach. I had been having some problems with my "nerves" - getting stressed more than usual, etc, so I also started on a very low dose of Xanax. When I take the Xanax with the Sustiva at bedtime on an empty stomach with no milk, I do just fine and sleep great. So, I guess I've found what works for me for now!
Thanks!

just throwing this out there....i started on the same med program and my doc told me to not eat any food about two hours before and his reasoning was that any fatty foods increased the rate of absorbtion....and that after being on this program i would get used to it and the nausea would settle. it did and ispent a year with combivir he then changed the combivir and gave me viread and lamivir to replace it with, wow what a diffrence, lots more energy and no bowel problems or nausea ever...good luck

hey sorry this is so late of a reply, just saw your post. I had nausea a lot before i knew about having HIV, but have to admit haven't had it since i started meds. nevertheless, i had extremely severe nausea to the point of vomitting (sorry if tmi!). I tried an over-the-counter nausea syrup from Rite Aid and it worked like gang-busters or should i say puke-busters, ok not funny! basically i think it's mostly sugar but it worked for me, it may be worth a try before you go for something more potent. also im not usually one for home remedies but there were some i got on the internet when i did a search on "nausea remedies" that did seem to work. most involved honey or sugar so go figure. hope you feel better!
