Yes, in fact, lots of people who gave blood for the first time for the sept. 11th found out that they were HIV positive or had hepatitis B or C.

so a lot of peole just use the blood bank as an accidental aids test? the blood bank must have pretty good screens and infallible ones, because i suppose a lot of people wouldn't have even indicated to them before donating that they suspected they were positive.

Most people do not. But some do...those who are cheap and scared of a direct test...

Do not use the blood supply as an HIV test! Before you give blood, please answer their screening questions honestly. There are usually free clinics where you can get tested for HIV without putting the blood supply at risk. Some clinics can test you with an oral swab, they don't even have to take any blood. Of course they screen the blood supply for HIV and other things, but why take a chance with someone else's life? Do the right thing!
