What do they mean by undetectable?
      #2295 - 04/04/00 08:04 PM

when some people with HIV who are taking medicines say they are undetectable, do they mean that when they are tested, the results come back negative?
if so, does that happen with all the tests available out there or just with some of them?
thanks.

It means that when you start taking the new medication called proatease inhibtors and you get a blood test if the viral load is lower than 500 it is undetectable that is how much of the virus is in your blood that is what viral load means it dose not mean the virus is gone because it hides in different parts of your body and it surely dose not mean the virus is gone once you test positive for HIV you have it forever it never gose away

I am not sure whether I am right or not, but I think that the HIV test will be positive for antibodies. In other words, antibodies will be detected. However, after taking the medicines, the viral load (actual measurment of the virus itself, not the antibodies) may go down to undetectable levels. I guess, that is what they call 'negative' here, not sure though. The antibody test, the test for infection, will be positive, however.

undetectable means that when the person is tested for the virus that only a small amt of the virus is showing. test detect the virus down to 500 copies. when it goes to 499 copies the test does not show the virus. it does not mean the person is negative just that the amt of virus is below 500 copies. anything above 35,000 copies is considered high (according to my dr) some of my friends have viral loads into the hundred thousands. at that level the virus is doing considerable damage. it is hoped at below 500 copies the virus will not cause damage to the immune system. there are tests now that will test down to 20 copies but are very expensive.
