What to expect? An uncertain future??
      #227211 - 05/22/07 06:10 AM

Hi all,

I'm a 38yo heterosexual dad of two toddlers, I found out in dec. after finding out i was cheated. The woman I was with had simultaniously an affair with a bisexual man. How could I have been that stupid...

After visiting my HIV doc he told me: you're not gonna die soon, with current treatment care the chance of hetting aids is almost zero. You'll see your kids graduate and I stringly suggest you to plan your life and to save money for your golden years. When you become infected nowadays, it's different then it was 12 years ago'

What do you think? Is he right? Should I buy it? Hwo do you regard longevity for newly diagnosed?

greets Zeb

Zeb,

First a bit of advice then some information:

The advice = sorry mate but you either got to find a doctor that you trust or you got to learn to trust the advice that your doctor gave you because, fortunately, it is true.

The information = (most of the members know my story) - I am Australian, lived in Thailand for 5 years, diagnosed over there in September 2005. They have some very good HIV doctors but where I was living they were crap. I had 2 choices: move near a good HIV clinic in Thailand or come home. I decided to come home, set up an appointment with the local GP who I have been going to for 20/30 years and I think that he is bloody good. First appointment = more blood tests to confirm the diagnoses. Second appointment he confirmed the diagnoses but he also confirmed how bloody good he is, admitted that he knew very little about HIV but had done some research - vast majority of people who have HIV and do NOT have proper medical care WILL progress to AIDS, vast majority of people who have HIV and DO HAVE proper medical care will NOT progress to AIDS (less than 15%). Referred me to a HIV specialist, I still not on medications, just go every 3 months where Professor 'Vampire' writes out the orders for my blood to be sucked again.

Yes mate, it IS an uncertain future. Way I see things, there is good news and bad news in everything that happens to us. Is up to every individual whether they concentrate on the good news or on the bad news. I prefer to concentrate on the good news = I DO NOT have AIDS (that is a death sentence), I only have HIV which is just a minor inconvenience. Shit a brick, for me there is even some good news about having HIV, I am retired, means that every day is just about the same = repetitious and fucking boring, but every 3 months I got to have blood tests, means I go to the 'big smoke', go to different bars, see different sights/different shielas (females).

So Zeb, is really up to you. I compare HIV:AIDS with colds and flu = you got a cold? It might develop into flu, most time it does not, same with HIV:AIDS. Main difference (you got to be realistic) is that a cold will go away, so far there is no cure for HIV. Do you want to concentrate on the bad news or on the good news?

Zeb,

A couple of postscripts:

PS: My doctor told me about the 'less than 15% progressing to AIDS' in Jan/Feb 2006 - with the advances that have been made since then your doctor's 'almost zero' is probably close to today's truth.

PS: Sorry, not sure if this is the right forum for my 2nd postscript - a little bit close to the bone - her pussy bones LOLOLOLOLOLOL
