Great resource for HIV/AIDS and ADA
      #225745 - 03/08/07 09:48 AM

http://www.jan.wvu.edu/media/aids.htm

This site has a somewhat helpful booklet that includes some suggestions on reasonable accomodations for people with HIV/AIDS. Some of the accomodations are silly, and some are very good indeed.

The Americans with Disabiilities Act covers people with HIV/AIDS, which is good news and bad. Good news is you have the right to work in conditions that accomodate your condition as a person with HIV/AIDS. The bad news is that unless you are very sick indeed there is likely work you can do with some reasonable accomodations, if perhaps at a lower rate of pay.

I am currently working on some accomodations at work, which sadly may eventually result in my reassingment to work at lower pay. Just now, I can do my job with some restrictions on the need for me to walk (I have peripheral neuropathy).

The meds for the neuropathy make me drowsy and many of them interact with my AIDS meds. The neurologist I am working with and I have tried a slew of pain meds and I am currently test driving imitrapine (spelling?). Unfortunately, this drug interacts with PIs, so I have to watch that I don't develop side effects (tremors, confusion, etc.) Tremors I could learn to live with, but confusion would hurt me at work. If the new med doesn't work, then he and I will keep trying until we get it right.

This new drug (to me) has "brightened" my depression considerably thus far.

Yes for the neuropathy. No the tremors (I don't have them) will not be coffee jitters but will be noticeable rhythmic and repetive movements of the extremities. Sounds ghastly, but oh well.

How are you doing? I may not bea able to answer right away as I have a meeting at work I have to pop off to. Hope the imitrapine doesn't make me loopy. Gosh.

I had read in a medical magazine that there was a gent with sever neuropathy due to another condition and the doctor decided to double up on his B 12 , not sure if it was injections or pills, and it eliminated the pins and needles to a extremely low level. Just something to think about and ask you doctor.
