Tommy Morison boxing champ?
      #225483 - 03/03/07 03:11 PM

I know this forum is not really sports oriented but figured this is another highly debatable topic regarding HIV, that many members might be able to shine some light on. It's about former heavy weight champion boxer Tommy Morrison. Tommy was one of the most thrilling heavy weight fighters during the early to mid 90's he even played a star role in Rocky, very rare for a real athlete. He compiled a record of 46-3 and was one of the best fighters in 1996. In 1996 moments before a scheduled heavy weight bout in Vegas he was told he tested positive for HIV. He retired from boxing and was banned from boxing. Today he is alive and healthy and wishes to resume his fighting career. What do you folks think about this? His viral levels are low, he is healthy and has trained very hard for 2 years. He will have to fight in certain states and countries where they have no rules against HIV boxers. He has two HIV specialists in his corner that have stated it would be safe for him to box again and of course there are those who say he should never box again.

What do you folks think? I remember Tommy Morrison from my youth. He was a passionate boxer who gave it his all each and every fight. He was exciting and fun to watch and a very rare Heinz 57 white guy in the ring at the heavy weight division. Not that color matters, but he was sure fun to watch. Should he be allowed to box again? Boxing, as you know, can get quite bloody, but his viral levels are very low.

Wasn't he told recently that it was a false positive, and that he does not have HIV?

I'm confused... but then again, I don't follow sports.

And as for allowing him to fight if he is positive, I'd leave that up to the scientists and doctors. Do they believe it's safe for him to fight a bloody fight? I dunno *shrug*...

That article was from 1997. He has since changed his thoughts on HIV and does take medications. The dude was in serious denial when he first got infected. I don't think you can judge him by that 1997 interview.

smilingwil,

The best thing to do is ignore DL. S/he just like to try to start crap by saying the opposite of what we all know to be true. Hope this helps.

if he is not hiv, positive then why shouldnt he?as for trying to do it now at his advanced age(for boxing)i think hes just looking to make a payday before its to late,i seen his fight and i think hes been away to long to be a serious fighter anymore.hes past his prime and out of shape,he was out of breath too,he looked like he was struggling to catch his breath even after the fight was over and ge was getting the interveiw.i hope its his way of bringing light to our medical problems, that would be real fitting for all of us,and that would make him my champ.no matter if he has a belt or not.
