Is tiredness a symptom?
      #223980 - 01/31/07 11:48 AM

Tested HIV+ in Sept 2005, contracted it in March or April 2005 (I think) regular monitoring, still no medication, readings holding steady. What I want to know is whether tiredness is a symptom of HIV. For example, my home is fairly small but more than adequate for my needs, it takes less than 30 minutes to vacuum and mop but once I have finished I need to sit down and rest for at least 30 minutes. I used to be able to walk miles and miles at a reasonably fast rate. Now, if I walk more than 0.5 of a mile my legs start to get so tired that they ache, much more than that and the whole body starts to get tired. What are your experiences?

Tiredness and fatique are common complaints among us with HIV. There can be several reasons for your tiredness. Just having the virus can cause fatique after a while. So also can a drop in testosterane that can be seen in HIV diease. Not only psyical symptoms, but depression and axiety can also cause fatique.

Talk to your doctor about this and insist that the cause be found and addressed. You don't have to accept being tired.

Bring this up to your doctor.

Definitely talk to the doctor about your fatigue. Like A1 mentioned, fatigue can be a symptom of many things. Don't wait on this... talk to the doc soon, so you can pinpoint the cause and work on it.

Take care.

I have had this problem most of my life and in the beginning it was caused by anemia. Once I was diagnosed and started taking my meds they seemed to clear my anemia and I was still going through the fatigue. When I spoke to my doctor about it she said it can most defenitly be the virus. I have since learned that do not over-do it. If I get tired to take a half hour power nap. My body is tellin me that is what I need and that is what I do.(sometimes it is more like an hour -lol) I would defenitly talk to your doctor just to make sure and I hope you start to feel better.

Tiredness can be caused by many things related to the virus. Depression in HIV+ folk is common; group therapy with other HIV+ people can help. In my experience, anti-depressants can worsen tiredness so they should be avoided unless the depression becomes debilitating. The virus can cause anemia some of which is serious particularly if the anemia is related to blood loss caused by low platelets (HIV attacks or effects platelets). Perversely some of the AIDS meds also cause anemia and platelet loss. The effects of the virus can also cause changes in liver function which can result in tiredness. Like any other viral infection, HIV can induce fevers, weight loss, and fluid loss - all of which can induce fatigue.

Make sure your doctor understands the fatigue is a major issue with you and ask him to order tests to identify the root cause of your tiredness.

For yourself, you can help by striving to maintain a positive attitude to life and your infection, eat well but not too much, get a moderate amount of exercise each day. Drink alcohol moderately and seek help if you find you can't stop drinking too much. Try a month without alcohol, if you can stop that long without desperation you are likely not an alcoholic.

A walk in a place you find peaceful and beautiful can provide both exercise and a peaceful mind. Read Thich Nicht Han's Being Peace or Walking Meditation for some insight into this effect.

Sadly, you may never have the level of energy you had before your infection. But with the help of your doctor, some but not too many meds, exercise, diet, and a positive attitude you can soldier through the fatigue.

Cheers,

If it persists, have your doc run your blood checking for anemia... Be sure to be stern with him/her that this is causing you problems...
