allergic reactions
      #221932 - 01/13/07 01:26 PM

Has anyone who is HIV positive had a lot of allergic reactiosn to antibiotics? I had two allergic reactions (the Bactrim one was the one who made me ask for the HIV test).the other one is Keflex. I am on Augmentin now and woke up with another allergic reaction (it is close to Keflex..but not always positive if the other is positive). I have never been allergic to anything before.

I had a reaction to Bactrim, but it was before I had hiv. I think it is a common reaction. Not sure about the other drugs. Good luck.

I believe the problem is that most docs give us too much antibiotics to begin with and don't think to start us off slowly so the body can adjust to the antibiotics. I had a Bactrim reaction that forced me to live in a bathrub of cold water for two days until my doctor believed I was having a reaction to sulfa drugs. If she had thought to have a run-in period for the Bactrim I likely could have avoided that agony.

Good luck, reactions to antibiotics are common, don't let your doctor torture you, complain loudly if the meds hurt you. There are loads of alternatives.

I think you are right about the use of antibiotics. I was put on Dapsone because my CD4 count was 183...after this huge allergic reaction to Bactrim. A few weeks later I had the same allergic reaction to Dapsone (50% people allergic to Bactrim are allergic to Dapsone). Geez, was I am dummy or what? So now I am the incredibly spotted woman again.
Needless to say I stopped the Dapsone. Doing well on Atripla (just started)..... so things should be looking up and hopefully no more spots. Thanks for the response.
B.
