I am a gay male who was religious about getting HIV tests. I know the earlier it is detected the better. However, I was recently diagnosed and was even more shocked to discover my cd4 was 220 and my viral load was 79,000. I had been tested almost a year to the day before and I was negative. Does anyone have any info on how my numbers were so bad after only a year ???

It could be a recent infection. When the virus first infects your viral load can sky-rocket during initial seroconversion and then drop back down. The lower number after the virus drops back down is sometimes called the set point.
On result on your CD4 count doesn't mean a whole lot. I once had it down at 209 and then the next blood work it had jumped up to over 600. CD4 are notorious for varying a great deal with little provacation. What's important is the trend that they take over time.

I disagree your CD4 count is important if you don't want to be diagnosed as AIDS once you go below 200 you are considered as AIDS you can eventually work your way back up to the HIV range (over 200 CD4) but you will always be AIDS status. To me personally its important for me not to be diagnosed as having AIDS, HIV is bad enough but I learned to deal with it. As for the numbers, it usually depends pretty much on who infected you, what their virus was like. Also it depends on how strong your immune system is and how well you take care of our self. Also something you might want to check in about is called a 'resistance test' b/c sometimes when one passes this diease to the other they might be resistant to a certain medication and if they were your meds wont work for you. but have faith, I dont have my numbers here but I know they got really high for my VL and really low for my CD4, now after about 8mos of meds i'm undetectable for VL and cd4 is over 600 = good :)

lifestyle is important too, eating the right way, exercise, when taking meds,no drinking, cant miss medication times either, alot comes into play along with the virus.street drugs are also not good for your immune system either.now isnt a bad time to start learning about this information now,its your life were talking about, making the correct choices will help you in the long run.good luck, take care
