You must, I repeat, must read this article from the New York Times magazine, available online at http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/13/magazine/13obesity.html?th&emc=th. Technically, the article is about obesity, but reveals that fat changes in the body are caused by microbes, including viruses. This lends credence to the belief that lipoatrophy is a function not just of HIV meds, but of infection by the virus. And not just the HIV virus, there probably are other viruses that play a role in fat distribution. A worthwhile study would be to test for antibodies of various viruses like the scientists did in the article, such as the adenoviruses, to find a correlation of lipoatrophy and infection.
