Why do the docs and many people say that if you catch it early you can live a full life. I just talked with 10 pos people who say that many are still dying and all of them have had good medical care. I want to believe that we will live for along time, but why are people still dying with meds? I guess they just want us to feel better at any cost, lying.

It is true that people still do not survive. However, the vast majority do well. Particularly those who comply with treatment. It is important to keep up with MD's recommendation.

Please dont try to over simplify this situation with people dying of HIV. It is not yet proven that everyone who gets HIV will die from it. There are many notable failures resulting in death: people with HIV who have developed a resistance to the meds, people who started drugs earlier than 1995 and people who waited until they were very, very sick to seek treatment and medications.
Here is an excerpt from a statement by someone else:
"So I urge all of the "newbies" to listen to those who have been interfacing with the ramifications of this disease, both on the health front and in the social front, and to take that knowledge to heart. With the utmost in respect, I say that they have laid their lives on the line so that we all may live. But never let someone make you loose your hope that your life will be/get better. It is the tragic life that is lived in hopelessness. "
...................
If you feel your life is hopeless, then you are already dead. And last but not least: people die every day from Cancer and other diseases. The only difference with Cancer is that you dont CATCH it. Living with HIV is a reality for many people, dont turn it into a wake.

No one really knows what will happen to us HIV pos folks in the long run. HAART meds keep us alive but for how long? They've been around for 10 years, but who knows after that. The MD's who say expect a normal life span are just speculating. Let's hope they're right.

Everyone responds differently to meds *shrug* Just remember that even negative people die for apparently no reason.. (natural causes anyone?)

This is how I see it and being around and being IN IT, ACTIVE IN IT. There are absolutely no guarantees. You wont find them in searching for them. They do not exist in your HIV Doc they do not exist in these forums THEY DO NOT EXIST! There are no guarantees on your life expectancy. There is no guarantee on your quality of life. All they can tell you is that you have a "chance"... THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN LIFE WHY ARE YOU WANTING ONE HERE????

Well, thanks Mr. 4Me, but I am only trying to point out the other side of the coin. One side...negative, one side positive. Which side are you on? I prefer being on the side that says: there is hope and we will be able to see improvements in HIV meds and in the life spans of HIV infected people.
Remember.....in 1985...HIV=DEATH was what we had to fight. (The slogan became SILENCE=DEATH) We fought for more immediate access to drug trials...and won. Life expectancy was still low. but HIV was no longer a DEATH sentence. Now in 2006...we have meds that will prolong life for an UNDETERMINED amount of time. It could be 30 or 40 years...who knows.
How old are you? 48? Are you on meds? If you live another 30 years how old will you be? 78? Do you want to live for another 30 years? Well, today is the first day of the rest of your life....live it how you want to.
See, you guys who are newly diagnosed, have the best chances of all of us, because you did not have to start on that nasty AZT stuff or the DDC or DDI. The combo platter today is much more sophisticated.

it doesnt matter only when you catch it,how you respond to the meds, how you adhere to them, and if you live healthy.they are all contributing factors.your number gets pulled you go thats it,i have a perfect example,a freind just died yesterday,i worked for him for about 5 years,he went to doc for years complaining about his chest all test were negitive.then 6 years go by and another doc looks at his chest and he finds lump, turns out to be cancer,6 months go by and hes dead, thats it.just because you have a doc doesnt mean squat, they are human as well,if they werent they wouldnt need malpractice insurance, take care

Good reality check, Bear. Any of could also be hit by a bus at any time. If you THINK you're gonna die, then you likely will somehow ... sooner rather than later.
Dying is as natural as being born, but why speed up the process with negative thoughts and unhealhy expectations?
My 2 cents.

People die of many different causes. Some do die from HIV complications but a lot more have long productive lives. Don't let HIV be a death sentence see your ID doc regularly, once on treatment stay on the meds. and take them regularly. If you do what you should who knows maybe you will die of old age long before HIV even phases you.
