This may seem like a very small (maybe even selfish) thing, but for me it’s progress.
This year I decided to send my father a card for Father's Day. He lives in a different city. He's an old school macho shithead so he never gets sentimental or discusses feelings. Ever. I don't expect him to acknowledge this, but that's okay too.
Maybe I'm growing up, or maybe I'm just tired of playing the reciprocal ignore game.
Despite the fact that we have obstacles between us which will never be resolved, despite all the baggage from my childhood that I had to work through, despite all of it, he’s getting on in years and we all know how tenuous life can be.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all the Dads who post here.

Daniel...My Dad died in 1999 and I will say that its a good thing to make the effort to communicate. I really tried as well, and we butted heads a lot, but came to terms and really had a good relationship at the end.

Yesterday, my father-in-law made several public comments about his belief that a man can NEVER claim to be a good father if he does not keep his wife happy at any cost. He then begin to list some specific things that my wife alleged that I’d done (many of them were half-truths or not true at all). I realized that I would make matters worse if I disagreed with him or tried to defend myself, so I kept my mouth closed. My pre-teen son, as well as many others, heard his comments. He rode home with me, and out of the blue he stated, "No matter what Granddaddy says, YOU are a GREAT father." He idolizes he grandfather and this was the first time he has ever said anything remotely against him. I felt 10' tall. Even as I type this now, I am bursting with pride.
Like many of you, my dad was from the "Old School" and didn't believe in praising and affirming males. Part of me have always longed for father/son affirmation. What I realized yesterday was that the feelings I wanted to get from my father are actually being giving to me from my own children....and it feels great!
Happy belated Father’s Day to all you dads! -Gary
