Tattoo's and HIV
      #196183 - 06/15/06 03:17 PM

Hi everyone,
I am + but my viral load is below 200. I am wanting to go for my first tattoo (at 32!) but I worry about exposure and disclosure, has anyone out there been refused because of their stat, or is it a don't ask don't tell policy (since I hope they never use their needles twice!)

Just wondering...

Thanks!

A reputable place will not use their needles twice. They also must autoclave anything that will be reused. They do not ask if you are poz. I would guess that since they use all the precautions with gloves and everything, it really does not matter. I would defenitly make sure it is a reputable place.
I got one a long time ago and need to have it redone. I also would like another but who knows if hubby will let me. Good luck. What are you going to get?

Thanks for the advice!
I'm probably going to get the cladagh (sp right?) symbol. Because I'm of Irish heritage, it is the hands holding a heart that is wearing a crown... it stands for friendship, love and loyalty...
:o)

by all means make sure you see the needle out of the plastic wrapper, make sure the ink has its own cup make sure they have a health certificate, most of all make sure they are reputible,it stays forever no matter what, but that idea sounds pretty cool, your viral load will go up.take care

i just had an old tatoo covered up with a new tatoo. they will have you fill out the paperwork, on it asks if you are hiv+. i talked to the guy that was going to be doing my tatoo before i even filled out the paperwork about my status. he told me that he did not have a problem with it, that it really is upto the person doing the tatoo, but they use universal procautions, so it would be fine. i dont think you will have an issue with getting one done..... good luck with it. i took my girlfriend to get her very first one for her 41st birthday and decided it was time to have one covered. i got daisies going all the way around my right ankle. i also have a daisy on my left foot.

i would think that question would go against the privalage of keeping your medical history privalaged with your doctor,or even break some kind of ada laws, i myself here in ny wasnt asked that question, only age,and show proof,by disclosing your opening a pandoras box, priviliged info is no longer protected when given to non medical personel, the way i understand it,mabey im wrong, take care

We posed this question to my husbands doctor. He said it is more of an ethical question than a NEED to disclose. My husband has many tats that he did not disclose. The ethical side comes in with "What if the needle slips and the artist pricks himself"? Very low occurence, yes, but if it did happen you would open yourself up to a lawsuit for not disclosing. It is kind of the good angel bad angel thing. I know my husband chose not to because he is sick of being discriminated against. We figured we would take the chance since the standards are so high now on cleanliness. The ironic thing is this is how he contracted years ago before all the high standards were implemented. Funny huh?

I have a tatoo, I love it. I got it when I was 21, it is a 4 leaf clover ( I am irish as well, laddie)on my left breast. I am 36 now, and the tat still look awesome! I agree with the rest of the board...make sure it is a clean enviornment and its up to you on disclosure. They are very careful and protect themselves...Hiv isn't the only virus out there..ya know?
Good Luck...no cryin' ...LOL
